Derby Day in Eastbourne Cup Quarter Final
Rangers hope to get back to competitive football this week as they face a tricky tie against friends and neighbours Eastbourne Athletic in the quarter final of the Eastbourne FA Junior Cup.
History certainly favours Athletic with rangers failing to notch up a win in recent times with last seasons 3-3 draw and 1-0 win in favour of Athletic still fresh in the minds of every ranger.
Both teams have showed indifferent form this season with rangers sitting second bottom of division 2 while Athletic sit mid table in division 3. Athletic got off to an excellent start to their 2013/14 campaign with a 2-2 draw at AFC Hastings sandwiched by two excellent home victories over Visick (2-1) and PunnettsTown (3-1). However, two defeats followed with Old Hastonians notching up a 3-1 win at Bexhill Road while a week later (the league leaders at the time) Rock a Nore crashed the party at the sports park with an impressive 5-0 victory over the hornets. Athletic then edged a 10 goal thriller at Lime Cross where Herstmonceux II fell short in a 6-4 scoreline. The hornets followed up this stunning victory with a tight 1-0 away win against Bexhill AAC II in the league cup while a week later Athletic snatched another league away victory coming away 3-2 winners against Bexhill United III.
A long trip to Lakeside Rangers 3 weeks later saw Athletic edged out 4-3 after extra time in the Sussex FA Junior Cup but this was followed up by a 4-1 win over Mayfield in the league cup which saw smiles returning to the faces of the Athletic players. The trip to Pebsham Sibex was definitely one to forget with the home side registering 4 unanswered goals while 14 days later the hornets secured a point at home to Northiam 75. As with most clubs, a long winter break followed with Athletics 9 weeks rest coming to an end last weekend when a depleted hornets outfit bowed out of the league cup losing 4-1 at Peche Hill Select II.
Athletic currently sit 8th in Division three but have played significantly less games than the teams around them, their current record reading P9 W4 D2 L3 F18 A23 Pts14.
Derby days are always close games and this will not be any different especially as this is the only chance for both teams to secure silverware this season.
1.30pm Kick off at the sports park for what will surely be a footballing spectacle :-)
