Eastbourne Rangers ESFL team made just one change to the starting XI against Framfield and Blackboys United I in the second round of the Sussex FA Junior Cup which saw Ben Jesson restored along side Jamie Strong up front. Jesson took the place of recent signing Jamie Baker- Beall who made up a strong rangers bench along side Lee Chapman, Dan Wilkes and Connor Sullivan.
The game in general was a scrappy affair with neither team managing to control the game. Rangers broke the deadlock midway through the opening period after some neat work down the rangers left between Sean Hardie and Jesson. The latter eventually beat his man, squared the ball up to Matt Wheeler who had the easiest of tap-ins to give rangers a 1-0 lead.
One goal is rarely enough in football, and this was to be the case in this game when United equalised with their first shot of the game with only 15 minutes left on the clock, a hammer blow for the red and blacks. Rangers made two changes in normal time with Wilkes replacing Wheeler, and Baker-Beall replacing Hardie with the hope of avoiding extra time. But after 90 minutes, nothing could separate the two sides and for the second time in two cup games, rangers had to put it in for another 30 minutes.
Lee Chapman then replaced brother Dan in the heart of the rangers midfield to add fresh legs and some extra impetuous to proceedings. Rangers restored their lead ten minutes into extra time after Baker-Beall was chopped down in the area (for the third successive game). Strong stepped up and calmly slotted the ball past the wrong footed United keeper and rangers then held on to secure safe passage through to round three where Mid Sussex division 3 side Nutley await.
The MOM was given as a joint award this week with Dave Bennett-Tomlin and Aaron Filsell superb in the heart of the rangers defence. Top work fellas. The management team would also like to thank Connor Sullivan for giving up his afternoon who was an unused substitute for this game.
That's eight wins from eight for this rangers side....
Rangers next game is in two weeks time against Little Chelsea in the quarter finals on the Eastbourne FA Junior cup. This is a repeat of the cup final last year which rangers won 3-1.
