Eastbourne and The Queen's Green Canopy

We are making excellent progress in shaping our plans. Here’s a brief update – please turn to www.eastbourneqgc.org for more detail – followed by a question.

We have identified the areas where we would like to plant trees, and are now turning our attention to detailed planning, specifying what we would like to plant in each small (i.e. 400 square metres) area so people can sponsor a tree that they like in an area of their choosing. The landscape designers at The Eden Project are working with us to ensure a beautiful and resilient outcome.

Numerous Eastbourne groups are talking to us about how they can engage with our plans, and shape them to their needs. We are particularly buoyed by the enthusiasm of schools (we are now working actively with ten of them), Rotary and The Royal Eastbourne Golf Club, a list that we look forward to adding to over the next two months.

We are delighted to announce that a working partnership has been established with 3VA , the long established Eastbourne-based volunteering charity, who will hold our funds, manage spending, bring in the many Eastbourne organisations that they work with, and handle arrangements with Eastbourne Borough Council, Treebourne and others. It is good to have such a well-established and capable charity as our partner.

Supportive relationships continue – and we listen carefully to – The Sussex Wildlife Trust, Towner, Eastbourne Borough Council, the South Downs National Park, the Forestry Commissions, East Sussex County Council and the Chatsworth Estate.

We are planning a succession of events – more on them in due course.

As for the question:

What should we call this avenue of trees and wildlife that we are planning across Eastbourne’s escarpment?

Our working title of “Eastbourne’s Jubilee Avenue of Ecologies” sounds clunky to us. What would be better? We follow The Jubilee Way for about half its length, so perhaps ''The Platinum Jubilee Way'' will serve both as a celebration and marker on the occasion of our extraordinary Queen and her Platinum Jubilee year?

Please let us have your suggestions for this – and for anything else to do with the project – at trees@eastbourneqgc.org

Spread the word to anyone, or any group, who would be interested to be part of realising this project and looking after it down the years. We are going to create a beautiful enhancement to our wonderful town, and a lasting memory of the Jubilee. The foundation of that will be people who have been part of shaping it and making it happen.

Yours,

The Eastbourne Queen’s Green Canopy Sponsorship TeamRalph Lucas, Annalisa Bicknell, Susan Body, Brian Murphy and Mia Thomson.

Plant A Tree for The Jubilee...
The Queen’s Green Canopy project is our Queen's chosen way for us to leave a legacy of her Platinum Jubilee – to plant trees and shrubs to celebrate her reign. In Eastbourne,...
