A lot of people tell me, “Oh yes, we sorted our LPAs years ago.” Then I ask, “Are they registered?” and I get a blank look…
Here’s the thing:
If your LPA isn’t registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, it can’t be used.
Registration takes a good two months (often more).
If it’s rejected because of an error and you’ve lost mental capacity in the meantime, that is it. Your family is straight into the Court of Protection with stress, delays, and thousands of pounds more in fees.
And just to make things more urgent: from November 2025 the government is increasing the registration fees. So not only will it take months to sort, it is about to get more expensive too.
The time to act is now.
Single LPA: £197
Pair of LPAs: £299
Four LPAs (both types for a couple): £547
(All plus registration fees for most people.)
The registration fee may be reduced in certain circumstances if you receive means-tested benefits. Accepted evidence includes:
Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit – full breakdown specifying guaranteed element, showing amount and dates received
Income-based Employment and Support Allowance – full breakdown showing income-related element of ESA, with amount and dates received
Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or Income Support
Housing Benefit – entitlement letter showing amount and dates received
Council Tax Benefit – entitlement letter showing amount and dates received (not the 25% single person discount or medical exemptions)
Local Housing Allowance – entitlement letter showing amount and dates received
Working Tax Credit combined with Child Tax Credit, Disability element, or Severe Disability element – full breakdown showing entitlement and dates received
If you are over 18 and do not yet have both types of LPAs, give me a call on 01323 766766 or email via the contact form.
Do not leave it until it is too late. Your future self and your family will thank you.
