New Year’s resolutions can be defined as things we intend to start doing or change and sometimes stop doing (give up bad habits and develop good ones) over the coming year.
New Year’s resolutions can be grouped into different categories: Fitness including doing more exercise and losing weight, spending more time with family and friends, academic which often means learning something new, professional, hobbies, food and drink, stop smoking or personal including enjoy life more, get out of debt, get organised, travel and see new cultures, volunteering, treat people better or spiritual growth.
Keeping New Year’s resolutions requires discipline and people need to keep in mind the reason for the resolution as a motivator. A list of rules can easily be overlooked but a goal of losing five pounds before your wedding or holiday is concrete, finite and achievable.
Spreading your resolutions out throughout the year may also make them easier to complete and setting interim goals demonstrates that you are making progress. For example: “I will give up smoking for January and then review it at the end of the month” or “I will limit myself to two cigarettes every day in January. By March I will have given up smoking completely. If that feels impossible, only smoke one cigarette socially per week. Keep your new year’s resolutions under review: if they are hopelessly unrealistic, they will only demoralise and undermine your confidence so make them realistic and adjust them whenever necessary. The key is make some progress, not everyone will achieve perfection at the first attempt.
