Unplanned trip to Lichfield turned into a beautiful adventure; free bank holiday activities

A pretty glorious spectacle - a crazily elaborate Gothic exterior which was great to visit ( and curiously uncrowded) on a sunny Bank Holiday. Loses one mark out of five - half because the interior isn't quite as dazzling as the outside, half because God doesn't exist (i.e. false advertising).

The Cathedral is free to enter but you are asked to make a donation to its upkeep. It is a stunning building - I just love the colour of the outside stonework and the intricate carvings. I think it is the only cathedral in the UK with 3 spires. It is nowhere near as big as Lincoln Cathedral which was the last one we visited but I think this adds to Lichfield's charm. I love the stained glass windows and we were visiting at a time where there is an exhibition to mark the end of WW1. We wandered over to the gift shop - No 9 in the close. The Cathedral is well worth a visit.

Absolutely stunning. For me it was on par with York Minster!!
It's free to enter, all they ask for is a donation. Will definitely return again.

We were lucky that a guided tour was about to take place shortly after we arrived and were even luckier that apart from the two of us, there was only one other person who joined the tour. This allowed us to find out about the history of the building (and others previously on the site) taking us from the eighth century to the present day. Many things were pointed out that we may not have noticed (such as the lean to the walls) and context and explanations were provided for many of the things we were able to see. In addition there was an exhibition commemorating 100 years since the end of the first world war.
Overall, a fascinating and absorbing visit.

The Cathedral is free to enter. you can give donations which helps the Cathedral's daily upkeep. It is truly beautiful both on the inside and outside. We have been to several events here and the Cathedral is always inspiring whatever the event. There is a small gift shop where you can buy gifts plus a gift shop outside the cathedral at No 9 in The Close.

My wife myself and four friends went to see the Lichfield youth company perform les Miserables at the cathedral on Saturday, what a fantastic day! The show was superb and enjoyed by us all couldn't fault any of it well done to all involved! And the cathedral was a very good venue and everyone worked hard to make this a fantastic production, brilliant all round!

An impressive place of history and peace. Many smaller areas to sit and reflect. Plus many events scheduled for all types to attend.

Lichfield Cathedral is easy to get to from the train station. It is well sign posted.

The cathedral is very peaceful, it has interesting historical displays and entry is free however they ask for donations.

They were very helpful and I was given a leaflet to aid my visit. Unfortunately tower tours weren't running when I visited.

We were there to watch a performance of Les mis by the Lichfield youth theatre. The whole evening was something special. The beauty and elegance of the cathedral, the general cheery atmosphere given off by all the helpers on entering the building. The show was full of young talent that will go onto stages all over the country/ world in the near future. The orchestra, sound and lightning was perfect for the setting. Well done to everyone who made the night so special.

Worth a visit if you are in the town. Right in the centre and full of history. Free entry. Quite amazing how the builders managed to create such a structure all those years ago

We walked up to the Cathedral and was very impressed with the size and details on the stonework before we even got inside.
We received a warm welcome and was provided with a small map that pointed out things to see. It was bright inside and we could take our time to look at everything. There was a tour as well if you wanted to have things explained and pointed out in more detail. Tower tours are aslo available at a small charge but wasn't running on the day we visited.
Definitely worth visiting as one of the best cathedrals we have had the pleasure to visit. There is also a small gift shop inside or you can visit a larger one just over the road from the front of the cathedral at the end of your visit.

The free to enter Cathedral offers opportunities to enjoy that sacred space whilst also glimpsing into the history of the building. They also offer additional portals into times gone by: today it was WW1 and poetry. The use of technology to powerfully portray the use fo poetry combined with the travesty of war was breathtaking. The guides available for all at no extra cost enabled an understanding of the various areas of the Cathedral. It was good to be able to stop and pause at Midday and pray for the world, led by the clergy. No obligation but very pleasant in these days of rush and pace to stop and reflect. The shop was discreetly kept to one side of the entrance and the welcomers were not in any way looking for donations merely informing you of the need for donations for the upkeep of the building if you could afford it.

Decided to visit for the afternoon with some friends from overseas - Have been before and thought worth another longer look. I like the fact that they do not charge an entrance fee but ask for donations - I understand must cost an arm and leg to keep these places open, but do not agree with a fixed entrance charge - at the end of the day it is the House Of God, so should be free......
