Devon Air Ambulance Trust celebrates becoming first Air Ambulance Living Wage Employer

Heléna Holt, Chief Executive of Devon Air Ambulance Trust, said “Without our fantastic team of staff and all our volunteers, we would not be able to sustain and deliver our life-saving service.  We pride ourselves on being a good employer and a forward thinking Charity.  We are delighted therefore to be the first Air Ambulance charity in the country to be accredited as a Living Wage employer.  This shows that we value all our staff and their wellbeing and we are committed to ensuring they all have a wage that covers the basic cost of living.”

 

Living Wage Foundation Director, Rhys Moore said: “We are delighted to welcome Devon Air Ambulance Trust to the Living Wage movement as an accredited employer.

“The best employers are voluntarily signing up to pay the Living Wage now. The Living Wage is a robust calculation that reflects the real cost of living, rewarding a hard day’s work with a fair day’s pay.

“We have accredited over 1,200 leading employers, including Devon Air Ambulance Trust, ranging from independent printers, hairdressers and breweries, to well-known companies such as Nationwide, Aviva and SSE. These businesses recognise that clinging to the national minimum wage is not good for business. Customers expect better than that. "

A living wage is an hourly rate which is set independently and updated annually.  It is calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK and is currently set at £7.85 an hour, although the London Living Wage is slightly higher at £9.15.

 

Employers choose to pay the Living Wage on a voluntary basis which is good for business, the individual and good for society.

  • Following the adoption of the Living Wage PwC found turnover of contractors fell from 4% to 1%.
  • The Living Wage affords people the opportunity to provide for themselves and their families.
  • 75% of employees reported increases in work quality as a result of receiving the Living Wage.
  • 50% of employees felt that the Living Wage had made them more willing to implement changes in their working practices; enabled them to require fewer concessions to effect change; and made them more likely to adopt changes more quickly.
  • The Living Wage campaign was launched in 2001 by parents in East London, who were frustrated that working two minimum wage jobs left no time for family life.
