The Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council has welcomed £1.6 million in government funding towards the refurbishment of Eastbourne's Grade II listed Winter Garden.

The money from the Getting Building Fund, designed to support economic recovery and create jobs, is a boost to the £3.9 million refurbishment project which will enhance the historic character of the venue by reinstating original features and architecture.

The Winter Garden project marks the final phase of the stunning new Devonshire Quarter complex.

Councillor David Tutt, Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, said: "I am delighted the government has recognised the importance of our much-loved Winter Garden and its position as the last piece of the jigsaw of the town's impressive Devonshire Quarter.

"Since the Winter Garden opened in 1875, it has hosted many events in Eastbourne's history and is very much a part of the town's fabric.

"We look forward to breathing new life back into the building over the next 18 months so that it can be used to its full potential for the future."

Devonshire Quarter is a top cultural, sporting and conference destination that includes restoration and enhancements to the Congress Theatre and Devonshire Park Theatre, major improvements to international tennis facilities, a new Welcome Building and cafe.
