Football has always been more than a game—and for one Eastbourne team, it is a lifeline, a confidence boost, and a celebration of community spirit.
Sanctuary United is a grassroots football club made up of young men from Eastbourne’s asylum, refugee, and migrant community. All of them have been supported in some way by local charity Sanctuary Eastbourne, which continues to champion inclusion and support for those rebuilding their lives.
The team is led by Zack, a former refugee, volunteer coach, and well-known face in Eastbourne. Many will remember Zack from his time managing Dem Shish restaurant—now he is giving back by mentoring the next generation through sport.
⚽ Undefeated and Unstoppable
In the past year, Sanctuary United have played friendly matches against the police, Eastbourne DGH, Lewes Prison, Matthew 25, and even Portsmouth FC—and they have won every single one.
But the journey is not without obstacles.
How You Can Help
Right now, the team trains wherever they can, but pitch hire, match costs, and transport are difficult to cover—especially for those seeking asylum. They do have official kits (thanks to Dem Shish) but need:
A regular training ground
Help with travel to matches
Financial support to organise more games
Sanctuary United is currently looking for a sponsor—or even just one-off supporters who believe in sport as a force for inclusion.
