A palliative care nurse who works at St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne has written and released a song with friends and colleagues in a bid to raise £10,000 for the charity.

The song, called Unbroken, is the brainchild of Oli Nazer, who also plays guitar on the track. It was produced by friend of the hospice, psychiatric nurse Ben Davidson, who is also the lead singer, bass and mandolin player, and producer of the song. The line-up is completed by St Wilfrid’s nurse Karen Connor on backing vocals.

The song reflects the experience of people on their journey through terminal illness, from the shock of diagnosis, fear and uncertainty, towards connection, gratitude for their life and the people in it, and a determination to keep living fully.

“As well as a passion for nursing, one of my greatest loves is music,” Oli said. “Unbroken was created to honour the extraordinary courage, love and humanity witnessed every day in palliative and hospice care.

“With the hospice hitting challenging times recently, I had the idea of trying to write a song that would shine a light on the world of hospice care, particularly on the incredibly inspiring patients, loved ones and carers I have the privilege of meeting every day. Their strength is humbling and a source of constant inspiration.

“The song is intended to be a reflection of our patients’ incredible capacity to ‘see sunshine, even when it feels like rain’,” Oli added.
