Nathan Dunbar from Polegate who is Head of Events for the Polegate Scarecrows Community Fund has concluded both the Willingdon Scarecrow Festival and the Polegate Scarecrow Festival 2021 this week and scarecrows were displayed around the towns until Saturday (24th July). The Scarecrow Festivals are still raising funds of charity which has will be split equally between SERV Sussex and St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Polegate Scarecrows Community Fund said, “Thank you very much to all Scarecrow Creators for making this year’s Polegate Scarecrow Festival such a success raising much needed vital funds for charities for 4 consecutive years.

We hope see you back here in time for our 5th Anniversary Polegate Scarecrow Festival but this has not yet been confirmed, we continue to appeal for anyone who can help us run the festival or to any businesses that can fund another Scarecrow Festival.”

Nathan has presented 6 awards to the best scarecrows found in Willingdon and 8 in Polegate, 4 special recognition certificates were also posted to those that made the final stage of judging.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Polegate Town Council, Cllr Douglas Murray and Cllr Dan Dunbar presented the Best in Show Award to Danielle and Lou who were even voted for the People’s Choice award following outstanding efforts in their entry.

Cllr Murray said, “As Mayor of Polegate I was privileged to award the Best in Show for Polegate's Scarecrow Competition 2021 to Danielle, Lou and Ella whose scarecrow was judged to be the winner this year. Extraordinarily conceived and constructed from numerous items including CD discs, straw, feather boa etc, it is a fine example of the ingenuity of the residents in our town.

All participants have shown great community spirit in entering and an amazing amount of creativity in their design and construction of their entries; all, young and older, are to be congratulated for their efforts.

The competition initiated and organised by Nathan Dunbar, is a wonderful example of an opportunity for our town to work together and I congratulate Nathan and team for all their hard work this and the past five years. We might all note that this year they have encouraged Willingdon to have a scarecrow competition which I believe will also become an annual event.”
