It was an exciting day for six St Wilfrid's Hospice staff and volunteers who represented the hospice at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party earlier this month. The occasion celebrated the dedication and contribution of those who serve their communities through volunteering, supporting charitable causes and working for emergency services.

The St Wilfrid's staff were Rachael Findlay-Geer, Claire Phillips and Ruth Jones. And from their volunteer team were Nicki Zurek, Paul Eaton and Trevor Craske. The group was delighted to mingle with the royals, including the King and Queen, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, The Princess Royal, and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

“I was thrilled to be able to attend this coveted event,” Rachael said. “Having the opportunity to meet and talk to the hospice’s patron Queen Camilla in such a setting was very special. I reminded her of her previous visits to St Wilfrid’s in 2014 and 2021 and she told me she was hoping to be able to come and see us again when it could be arranged.”

Paul added: “I am a therapy dog visitor with Canine Concern and go to St Wilfrid's with my Labrador Milo as often as possible. It was such an honour and privilege to be selected to go to the Garden Party and an even greater honour to actually meet the Queen. It was a very special day and one I shall always remember.”

“I have always been an avid fan of the royal family,” Nicki said. “So, for me, just receiving the invitation to the Garden Party was a huge thrill! But then to experience the splendour of the palace and gardens, the wonderful hospitality, all in an informal and relaxed atmosphere, was incredible. Having the opportunity to actually meet the Queen is one of the most memorable moments of my life!”

St Wilfrid’s Hospice provides high-quality care and support for people across Eastbourne, Seaford, Hailsham, Uckfield, Heathfield (and all points between) with life-limiting illnesses.
