Young people considering a career in healthcare are invited to apply for a unique volunteering opportunity at St Wilfrid's Hospice in Eastbourne.
The Young Clinical Volunteer (YCV) Programme is aimed at people aged 16 to 24-years-old. They complete one four-hour shift every week for six months on the Inpatient Unit, volunteering alongside healthcare professionals, gaining insight into what it’s like to support patients and their families. They also have the chance to connect with teams across the hospice.
Seventeen-year-old Connor was part of last year's intake of YCVs and hopes to be a doctor. “Volunteering at St Wilfrid’s gave me a lot more than I expected,” he said. “I thought maybe I’d sit on a desk and just watch everything, but you get to interact with patients, families, doctors and nurses. It can be intense sometimes, but also fun, and so rewarding. All the staff are really friendly, and I would encourage any young person who’s thinking about applying to go for it.”
Over the course of the programme, YCVs complete a workbook which follows the 16 standards of the Care Certificate. They are supported throughout by a dedicated mentor and the wider Inpatient Unit team.
YCV Co-Ordinator, Gillian Laloux, said: “This is the perfect opportunity for young people looking to gain valuable skills to add to their CV, build confidence and get hands-on experience in a healthcare environment. It’s ideal for anyone who is interested in a future in healthcare, or who simply wants a volunteering placement that genuinely matters.”
There are just 10 places available and the closing date for applications is 12th June. However, if sufficient applications are received before then it may close early. Visit stwhospice.org/ycv for more information.
