We are delighted to have purchased two sets of handgrip dynamometers for the Sussex Cancer Centre. They were purchased with a kind donation from the THANCS (head and neck cancer support group). Photo:Mhairi Donald Consultant Dietitian with one of the Handgrip Dynamometers.

The handgrip dynamometers are used routinely as a measure of undernutrition, to give a baseline level but also a mechanism for ongoing review and motivation.

Patients squeeze the grips to measure muscle strength. Muscle strength responds earlier to nutritional losses and nutritional support than other parameters. It can predict morbidity and mortality independent of muscle mass and is something the team will use as part of their overall nutritional assessment and plans.

They will work with individual patients to help monitor changes in strength that can be an indication of whether they are obtaining enough of and the correct nutrients. Nutrition plans can then be adjusted and the appropriate advice given.
