Councillors at Eastbourne Borough Council yesterday (September 15) agreed three new technical advice notes for developers that place a greater emphasis on sustainability, both in the planning phase of construction and when work is underway on site.
The planning technical advice notes (TAN) cover sustainability, biodiversity and electric vehicle charging points (EVCPs) and will apply to any new homes or commercial development, large or small, in the town.
Councillor Colin Swansborough, Cabinet member for Place Services and Special Projects, said: "When we set out our ambition two years ago for Eastbourne to become carbon neutral by 2030, it was clear that we needed support from all sectors to achieve our goal.
"These technical notes set out our expectations of developers and other planning applicants to ensure they play their part by putting sustainability at the core of all new developments."
The Sustainability TAN requires planning applicants to complete and submit a checklist to show whether sustainability issues have been given consideration in their proposal
The Biodiversity Net Gain TAN places a duty on developers to ensure habitats for wildlife are enhanced and that development delivers a minimum 10% biodiversity net gain
The Electric Vehicle Charging Points TAN sets out the requirements for these charging points to be provided in new housing and commercial developments.
Councillor Swansborough added: "Installing electric car charging points at new developments is a very positive step for the environment as use of this type of transport will help reduce carbon emissions and cut pollution in the air we breathe."
