ELections 2015

Next Thursday May7th, people across the UK will come together to vote in the general election. The make-up of parliament will decide the direction that national politics will take for the next 5 years.

There are three parliamentary constituencies within the city of Brighton and Hove: Brighton Pavilion, Brighton Kemptown, and Hove. A total of 21 candidates of all political shades will be standing for these seats in 2015.

The Brighton and Hove City Council elections will also take place on the same day. There are 236 councillor candidates for 54 seats in 21 wards.

It is our democratic right to exercise our vote, some would also say, our democratic responsibility. In the last local council elections in 2011 only 41% voted; nearly six in 10 did not vote. In the general election of 2010, 65% voted nationally, that is just over 3 out of 10 did not vote. Read this article in the Brightion and Hove Independent paper for more on these breakdowns and why this year's local council elections are particularly important in the way they may affect you and me in the current economic climate.

Do you know your parliamentary candidates? Your local council candidates? What they stand for and where to vote on the day?

Our friends at the Brighton and Hove Independent Weekly Paper, have put together a comprehensive on-line resource to help inform us fellow citizens ahead of election day. We are pleased to draw attention of these articles to our readers here..
