What is the best way to clean a hardwood or parquet floor?

Here are some of our tips for looking after your floors!

Always start in the furthest corner from the door and work towards the door and wring the mop out thoroughly to ensure the floor does not get too wet. Sweep or vacuum regularly and always before mopping to ensure nothing can be caught beneath the mop that would damage the floor.

Parquet and Hardwood Floors

Cleaning something this valuable can be intimidating. If vacuuming ensure the bristles are extended to prevent scratching or invest in a bare floor attachment.

Only clean the floor when it really needs it to help prolong its life.

If your floor is sealed clean with a damp mop and use a product specially made for cleaning your type of wood as they have a special cleaning and nutrition ingredient in them.

If you notice a scratch in your floor don’t panic. Buy a wood repair kit that matches your wood and some floor wax from your local hardware store. Paint very carefully over the scratch along the grain of the wood. Once the paint is dry apply the wax with a paintbrush until it matches the smoothness of the surrounding wood.

If you are having lots of guests it is a good idea to put down carpet runners over the flooring in the busy areas. These can look very stylish and will protect your floor from the trauma of high heels and heavy shoes that could leave dents.

If you would prefer not to use runners, consider installing a floor mat near the exterior entrances as these will catch most of the dirt that visitors may track in.

Slate floors

Slate floors are attractive but are porous, prone to staining and require special care and maintenance to look their best.

Dust-mop the floor, moving the dust-mop in one direction only. Avoid a back-and-forth sweeping motion, which only moves the dust around.

Wet mop the floor with just water and no cleansers, unless the floor is badly soiled.

Let the floor air dry and keep people and pets off the floor until it's dry.

To remove stains from a slate floor rub them using a brush with non-metallic bristles, water and a small amount of detergent.

If the stain is persistent and is on non-coloured grout, use a 50/50 solution of water and hydrogen peroxide. Allow the solution to remain on the stain for 15 minutes.

If the stain is on coloured grout, try shaving cream. First, apply shaving cream on grout that is not highly visible to make sure it won't discolour the grout. If it's safe, apply shaving cream to the coloured grout and rinse off the shaving cream with warm water after 15 minutes.

Tiled floors

Tiled flooring is a durable choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas of the home that might get wet from time to time. With the proper care, tiled flooring can look like new for years.

Mop the floor with warm water. If the floor doesn't have stains or require heavy cleaning, running a damp mop over the floor will be sufficient to keep it clean.

Dry the floor by running a dry mop over the floor when you're finished mopping to prevent new dirt from accumulating and staining the grout.

Clean up spills promptly. If you drop a glass of juice or even water, clean it up right away as the longer it sits, the more time it will have to soak into the grout.
