THIS WEEK IN BRIGHTON AND HOVE...


It’s the Brighton Kite Festival this weekend, one of the longest running kite festivals in the country. The festival is taking place in Stanmer Park on both Saturday and Sunday, and it’s free to attend, although donations are requested. There will be displays of a wide variety of kites, and there are children’s workshops too. Read more on http://www.brightonkiteflyers.co.uk/festival.html.


Saturday sees the launch of the Summer Reading Challenge for kids, with workshops and talks for children and young people at the Jubilee Library. Discussions include how writers keep their stories exciting, and why dark themes in young adult fiction are so compelling. Head to Shoreham on Saturday for the Pocket Science Festival, billed as a funfair with a twist. With attractions like the amazing shrinking puppet booth, and games including splat the rat, this is designed for children aged 7-14 and their families. It’s run by the team behind the Brighton Science Festival. The festival is being held at the Ropetackle Centre from 10am-4.30pm, with family tickets costing £18. http://www.brightonscience.com/pocket-science-festival/


Running fans should head to Hove Lawns on Saturday morning at 9am sharp for the first Hove Promenade parkrun. If you’ve never heard of parkrun, it’s a free, timed , weekly 5k run for people of all ages and abilities and it’s a brilliant way to get fit and stay fit. There are two existing parkruns in the city in Preston Park and Hove Park. If you want to find out your time after the run, make sure you register and then print out your bar code. The Brighton Craft Alliance returns to the Open Market on Saturday 11th July. A curated arts, craft and vintage fair with their own brand of arty, quirky and crafty goods, it is an opportunity to speak to the artists and pick up an unusual and unique gift for yourself or a loved one.
