Local Brighton and Hove Electrician Jim Cannell talks about Outdoor Lighting and Outdoor Security

Lighting

Installing outdoor lighting is quite a popular task at this time of year. With the clocks having gone forward it gets darker so much earlier.
I suppose there are three broad categories; Decorative lighting, utility lighting and security lighting (although the latter two don't have to be unattractive!).

The most popular decorative lighting I install is LED lighting, especially in decked or garden areas. It's very low maintenance, cheap to run and gives a real sparkle to your property, squeezing extra enjoyment from the outside, even when it's too cold and dark to be out there yourself!

Utility lighting ensures that paths, steps and allys are well lit - although care is required so that the new lighting doesn't make things worse by creating dark shadowed areas. PIR (Passive Infra Red)  sensors are now very common so that the way ahead is lit as you approach, and of course they turn themsleves off afterwards saving money and the environment.

Security lighting

Security lighting often means bright flood lighting, either on a sensor or timer, to deter intruders from private homes, or vandals from unattended buildings. Nowadays low energy versions are available, as well as two-state lamps that cast a low level light continuously through the night, but are triggered to full brightness by approaching people.

Do you supply new outdoor lights, have you got a catalogue for people to browse?

I have accounts with a number of local and online wholesalers, who between them cover most styles and brands with prices for a single light fitting ranging from less than £10 to several hundreds. I carry catalogues for my favorites, and can request them for others. I'm also happy for customers to buy their own items, and I will do the installation, even offering free advice if they are finding it difficult knowing what to choose.

Interesting / challenging jobs in the garden or outside the house
I always take an interest in my work! My favourite trick at the moment is interlinking the PIR sensors of two or more security lights, so no matter which direction you approach from all of the lights come on together, greatly adding to the security and convenience of the lighting.
