How to deal with Mould

Mould is a sign of a damp problem, which means you need to find the source of damp in your home and neutralise it. Common causes of damp include: excess condensation or leaks and other plumbing problems.

To find the source(s) of your damp problem, check for leaks, cracks or blockages in pipes around the areas with mould. If you have mould in several different parts of a room, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, you may have a condensation problem. If you have a leak, make sure that it is fixed before you attempt to remove mould, because otherwise it will just return. If condensation is causing the mould, improve the ventilation in your house to reduce condensation.

After you’ve dealt with your damp problem, remove mould from surfaces using the following process:

  • Mix chlorine bleach and water (1 part bleach, 3 parts water).
  • Put some of the solution on a stiff-bristled brush and scrub the mouldy area.
  • Rinse and repeat if necessary. Dry thoroughly.
