Getting to and from Heathrow from Brighton and surrounding areas...

It's almost the summer holidays and thousands of us will be jetting off to hot, exotic places near and far for adventures, partying, relaxing on the beach and cultural breaks. The last thing you need is to have a nightmare of a journey to and from the airport, so here's the second post in our airport transfers series, this time covering Heathrow.

Brighton and Hove to Heathrow by car

Your car is the fastest option, but only if the traffic treats you kindly. There are no guarantees and only last week it took a friend of mine four hours by car. She almost missed her flight, so unless you check the traffic news every five minutes and set off with large amounts of spare time in had, it can be risky! Keep the radio on for traffic updates and take an old fashioned map with you just in case your GPS insists on taking you on a route that's experiencing delays.

Trains to Heathrow airport from Brighton and Hove

There are plenty of trains from Brighton rail station to Heathrow, often four or more an hour, taking you to Heathrow railway station in just over two hours. Trains are often much more reliable than driving because they aren't threatened by traffic jams, but check the National Rail website just in case there's emergency work going on, even though they usually mend things on Sundays.

There are also regular services from Hove railway station, with a similar journey time.

As a general rule the earlier you book your train tickets, the less they cost, and travelling at commuter times is always more expensive as well as very crowded, not ideal if you have mountains of luggage to carry.

Here's a link to the National Rail website.

Travelling to Heathrow airport by coach

National Express coaches provide hourly coach services to Heathrow during the week, picking up at several stops in the city before heading off. The journey takes just over two hours in a comfy coach with loads of dedicated luggage storage space in the boot. Provided the traffic behaves itself, it's an excellent way to travel and costs as little as £28.10. It's easier to get cheap tickets when you book well in advance, as the cheapest fares are snapped up fast.
