Are you feeling frazzled at the edges? Would you like to reduce your stress levels, see the world more clearly and float off into a delightful mental space where your mind is quiet and you're better able to keep things in their proper perspective? Inner peace is a wonderful thing and meditation is an excellent way to achieve it.

Meditation delivers better concentration, which means you're more productive wehther you're engaging in creative pursuits or getting down and dirty with your everyday job. It can give you a better sense of perspective too. Instead of worrying away at small things until you've made them into large issues, you'll learn to live in the present rather than the past or the future.

Numerous studies have hown that meditation leads to better health because it reduces stress, which often underpins illness. And when you know your inner self better, you feel calmer and happier as you gain a better understanding of the inner workings of your mind.

So what does meditation feel like? One thing's for certain, you won't feel hypnotised. No woozines, no going to sleep... just beautifully calm and clear and serene, fully alert and extra-conscious.  Once you've learned how, meditation becomes a valuable part of your everyday life and can become a life-changing, life affirming, wholly positive life tool.

If you'd like to learn to meditate, you'll love the Brighton Buddhist Centre at 17 Tichborne Stree, parallel to Gardener Street. You can visit the centre between 12.30 and 2.30 Mondays to Fridays and 11.00 to 1.30pm on Saturdays. You'll find the staff wonderfully friendly, open and calm, and they're always happy to answer questions.

The Brighton Buddhist Centre has been teaching meditation since way back in 1974, and today is one of eighty such centres worldwide dedicated to making meditation (and Buddhism, if you'd like to find out more) to everyone.

Meditation isn't about religion, it's about consciousness. Whatever your religion, whether you're Buddhist or Catholic, Muslim or atheist, you'll be made very welcome. Here's just a few of the things you can enjoy at the Centre:

  • meditation classes, courses and retreats
  • books, incense and cards
  • special events
  • yoga and tai chi for grown ups and children
  • Buddhism courses
  • talks on a variety of subjects
  • community events and involvement
