New Year’s Resolutions 2012

No, not a mistake, but think ahead 12 months and I wonder how many of you will be resolving on 1st January 2012 to lose weight and get fit...all over again?

The majority of us will fail to stick to resolutions until the end of January, let along all year, but when it comes to weight loss, short term solutions simply don’t work anyway; which is precisely why the diet industry is so profitable. The solution is to gradually introduce small manageable changes to your diet which will then become part and parcel of your eating regime.

My advice for the New Year might go against the grain, but would be to eat your way back to health. Think about undoing the damage you may have done over the festive season; not with a drastic detox and draconian diet, but by feeding your body with the foods it needs to function; and plenty of them.

The key is to look after our body’s main life support system; the liver. The liver is one of the most incredible organs in our body since amongst its many roles it supports our immune system, stores vitamins and minerals, as well as filtering, processing and excreting toxins. It also makes substances such as hormones that are vital to our survival, and breaks down and gets rid of those we don’t need.

You can help your liver work well by reducing its toxic load (alcohol, caffeine, processed foods), leaving it free to support your immunity and metabolism. But then focus on eating plenty of foods which help the liver function and repair – add lots of fruit and green leafy vegetables to meals and include sulphur containing foods such as garlic, onions leeks and eggs. Also, drink plenty of water throughout the day- 6 large glasses will help. Easily overlooked, but vital for our overall health .

So make just one new resolution for 2011 – forget about dieting and deprivation, and instead learn to enjoy your food by concentrating on the good, healthy, tasty stuff, leaving the way clear for much more fun and achievable resolutions in twelve months time.

“To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art.” La Rochefoucauld
