Comic Boom @ Komedia - A Review

Comic Boom is run by renowned comedy coach Jill Edwards on the last Thursday of the month at Komedia and showcases the most exciting, up-and-coming comedians.

Jill has coached many of the UK’s successful stand-up acts, including Jimmy Carr, Seann Walsh, and Shappi Khorsandi.

She continues to find original comedians who are on the cusp of breaking onto the professional circuit to play at Comic Boom, where many of her professional graduates started out.

Jill decided to set up Comic Boom because she realised that it is very difficult to go from being a new act to a professional comedian.

She said, “One of the things I noticed that people needed was the experience of playing a really big room.

“So with Comic Boom, originally the idea was to have a transfer club.  There would be somewhere that was in between, that would take them up to the next level.”

Jill goes to comedy festivals to look for comedians and often has acts recommended to her because she has so many contacts after more than 20 years in the industry.

She puts comedians on the bill who have won competitions and are better known, as well as one act each time who is “new to Boom”, protected in a slot in the second half of the night.

Regulars to Comic Boom have seen comedians progress from five, to ten, to headline spots and even come back to guest-MC the night once they are famous, as Seann Walsh has done.

There are four excellent resident MCs - Romesh Ranganathan, Paul F Taylor, Mark Simmons and Paul McCaffrey and Jill always ensures the night starts with a really strong opening act.

Comic Boom is a brilliant night, guaranteed to give you plenty to smile about and only costs £9 (£7 conc, £6 NUS).
