Bringing sculpture to Hove seafront

Hove has some impressive examples of Victorian sculpture but very little public sculpture has been added in recent times.

Hove Civic Society wants to change this. Hove Civic Society has planning permission to install a stone plinth on the King's Esplanade at the foot of Grand Avenue. The Plinth will be used for changing displays of sculpture, inspired by the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Our key aims are:

  • To put Hove on the sculpture map with world class cultural attractions
  • To link heritage with contemporary works of art
  • To celebrate local artistic excellence
  • To contribute to the city’s cultural calendar

Following Arts Council funding received this year, a call to artists was issued for sculpture proposals for the plinth. The winning entries, for Hove plinth sculpture competition 2015 were :

  • Escape by Matthew James Davies.
  • Flight of the Langoustine by Pierre Diamantopoulo
  • Constellation by Jonathan Wright

We are now appealing for funding to commission the sculptures. The three winning entries will be the first sculptures to be installed on Hove Plinth. Each sculpture will be in place for 12-18 months, after which they will be found permanent positions in Hove and Brighton.

The Society is seeking funding for this initiative from corporate and business donations, grants by large art funding organisations and donations by the public.

Hove Civic society has received funding pledges of £55,000 but needs further support to pay for the plinth's stone cladding, landscaping, cabling and lighting works, as well as for sculpture commissions.

We need contributions to help fund the stonework, which will cost £42,000. We also need sponsorship for broadband cabling (£7,500), cabling for the power supply (£6,000), lighting installation (£7,000) and landscaping (£3,000).

Ongoing support for the maintenance of the plinth, which is estimated to cost £5,000 per year, is also sought.

Founder scheme :

We have several Founder packages that will allow different levels of support for the plinth and sculptures.

Corporate sponsorship :

A sculpture could be bought outright, perhaps to be placed in a corporate head-quarters or new development in the city, once it has been on Hove Plinth.

Or part contributions could be made a new public location subsequently identified in collaboration with the council.

Public donation :

Anyone can be part of this amazing project by making a one-off donation, large or small.
