It's easy to assume when visiting Walsall that there wouldn't be much in the way of greenery but The Arboretum provides a sense of calm in an otherwise crowded town centre. With the Hatherton Lake providing a wonderful home to the local wildlife, beautifully kept flower beds and a wonderful visitors centre, the Arboretum is a wonderful place for all toe visit.

It also has a play area, skate park, free tennis courts and outdoor exercise area, as well as plenty of area for walkers and joggers to use. There is also the visitors centre with a cafe and shop to buy bird seed.

There are also regular events here, such as free music events at the bandstand, Parkrun every Saturday, charity events and paid events such as a funfair and fireworks.

The only downside is sometimes the toilets are locked in the day but usually the visitor centre toilets are open. Really enjoyable place to visit with family, friends and children.

This is a truly exceptional place to visit. Situated in the middle of Walsall, a few yards from the old town centre.
Having done many walks around the arboretum can speak from experience.

Beautiful park which is lovely especially in the autumn. Playground for the children, refurbished tennis courts. Great to see it used by so many taking part in the park run each Saturday.

Haven't been there since the lights displays were removed. Shame to see them go
As I know many families used to look forward to that time of year. Used to be a good family day out with friends as well. Went for the bonfire display this year. Absolutely loved it. Disappointment for many as tickets sold out. Will be back next year.

First time we came to see the fireworks here in Walsall, the park is huge although we didn't get a chance to see much as we were only here for the fireworks display.. Poor lighting and security but the fireworks were awesome we enjoyed ourselves to be honest!

We visited the Walsall Arboretum on a Sunday afternoon. We had a nice walk around the park before going to the large play area. There is lots to do on the kids play area.

Parking is on the side roads. This is worth a visit if the weather is good. In the summer months they have the water sprinklers on in the playground for the kids to play in as well.

Really good sized town park with play areas a tourist information area with a cafe. Not sure what the cafe is like.
There is often something on one week to the next. But also a nice walk. Parking is limited but there are some free spaces. However they are time limited and warden patrolled.

Walsall arboretum was named centuries ago but in reality is the towns major park. If your expecting swathes of autumnal coloured trees you may be disappointed but if you want pleasant strolls, abundant leisure facilities for all ages, or viewing the displays over a decent tea and home made cake in the park cafe then you'll definitely be pleasantly surprised

Walsall Arboretum situated in the centre of a a busy shopping town. 5/10 minutes walk but well worth it.
Part of the park and surrounding housing are covered by the Arboretum conservation area. The park has undergone a major restoration and redevelopment programme funded largely by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The Arboretum was officially opened on 4 May 1874 by Lady Hatherton. The park consisted of two lakes, two lodges, a boathouse, bandstand, several summerhouses, a tree lined promenade, space for dancing, a flagpole, croquet lawns and a cricket ground.
In 1878 a steam boat named "Lady of the Lake" was launched.
In May 1886, heavy rain caused more flooding and this caused the "Lady of the Lake" to sink.
During World War I, the park was used to grow potatoes and timber which was supplied to the Walsall War Agricultural Committee.
During World War II, 100 allotment plots were provided. The water level in Hatherton Lake was raised in preparation for fire fighting following bombing raids.
In 1952, 15 acres (6.1 ha) of land were purchased to connect the park to the canal.
In 1999 a rare species of white-clawed crayfish was discovered in Hatherton Lake.
The park is home to over 10,000 species of tree and shrubs.
The Arboretum has an area of over 80 acres (32 ha). It comprises a number of distinct areas, including:

Hatherton Lake (boating lake)
A bowling green and club house
Several acres of open playing fields
A children's play area
A Splash Pad

Well worth a visit to this Historic Park

We walk through the arboretum on our Walsall shopping trips. Enter near the Broadway carvery and exit by Morrisons after passing the great childrens playground and facilities, trees galore in full colour now its autumn, a lovely new visitors centre and cafe, lake full of ducks, geese, birds and swans as well as the newly renovated band stand and boathouse. Money well spent and an asset to the town.

Had not been to the arboretum for a long time but was surprised to find how popular it remains, lots of events to attend. It is kept in good condition and still has lots of visitors, which says a lot for it.
