Choosing Quality Assured Childcare

When deciding to return to work or education, childcare is generally the most important factor that we need to consider.

In Wales, childcare along with adult care and social services is regulated by the Care & Social Services Inspectorate Wales – CSSIW. Childcare choices can be split into two categories, and it is important that we understand these.

1. Registered Childcare: Anyone who provides childcare for children under the age of 8 for more than 2 hours a day for reward must be registered with CSSIW. Choices in this category will include;

  • Day Nurseries such as Osbourne Lodge
  • Childminders
  • Playgroups
  • Out of School Childcare Clubs such as Breakfast Club, After-school Club and wrap around day-care for school aged children

2. Unregistered Childcare: The following childcare choices are not required to be registered with the CSSIW;

  • Clubs & childcare sessions that run for less than 2 hours per day
  • Au Pairs
  • Babysitters
  • Friends and family members

Making your choice can seem daunting as we consider both practicality and affordability, so we asked Nikola Masters to explain some of the key points for consideration to us;

“as you consider the options available, there is no substitute for visiting several childcare settings so that you can meet the staff, witness the care being delivered to the children and get a feeling of the atmosphere. You should feel welcomed and be able to witness happy children who are able to move freely around the setting and have a choice of stimulating activities available to them. At Osbourne Lodge Nursery we have a variety of themed rooms and areas that provide the children with opportunities to stimulate their pre-school educational needs in a safe but FUN environment. You can come in and look at our Rainbow Room from the comfort of your armchair now by visiting our new 360o virtual tour. This room is used by the toddlers and pre-school children for educational activities, art, sand & water. We will have a virtual tour of the full nursery available to view soon on our website.”

Affordability is another factor that will influence our decision when choosing a childcare setting. Whilst the unregistered options may appear more affordable, it is unlikely that you will be eligible to receive the financial support that we explained in our previous blog.

To summarise, the following questions may be helpful when considering what you are looking for in a childcare service;

• Is it welcoming?

• Is it a stimulating place for children?

• What facilities does it have?

• Is it caring?

• Are the hours when childcare is available suitable for your needs?

• Do they provide meals, snacks, nappies etc or will you need to provide them?

• What is the cost?

• Do they have places available for your child?

Nikola told us “Your local Family Information Service, will be able to supply you with contact details for all registered childcare settings in your area, and we have attached a useful guidance document with this blog to help you which includes the contact details of your local Family Information Service office”.
