Workmates at a Shropshire caravan, motorhome and campervan dealership have won a soap box derby organised by a wildlife charity in the county for the second year running.

Last year, touring caravan engineer Ian Hart won the inaugural derby organised by Cuan House at The Edge Adventure in Much Wenlock. This year, Ian crashed in the first race, opening the door to workmates at Salop Leisure in Shrewsbury, Adam Franklyn and Nick Wood, to take the title.

Adam and Nick’s winning soap box was designed as a touring caravan bearing the Salop Leisure and Swift brands. The soap box was built on a three-wheel chassis made out of BMX parts.

Ten home-made soap box vehicles took part around a purpose-built track to raise money for Cuan House, which rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned wild animals and birds.

“Ian won it last year, but we managed to snatch the title from him this time,” said Adam. “There were two races and we were judged on the best time recorded. Ian was unlucky to crash in his first race.”

The Salop Leisure engineers are no strangers to competing in charity events, as they recently took part in the Dragon Boat Race in Shrewsbury.
