Shrewsbury Town Council is inviting residents to take part in a programme of events and activities as the nationally recognised Knife Angel continues its stay in The Square until Friday 31 July, inspiring reflection, education and community action across the town.

The striking 27ft sculpture, created from more than 100,000 surrendered knives and blades collected by police forces from across the United Kingdom, has become a powerful focal point for reflection, education and community engagement since arriving in Shrewsbury. As part of the National Youth Anti-Violence Educational Programme, the Knife Angel seeks to raise awareness of the devastating impact of knife crime and violence whilst encouraging positive action to help create safer communities.

Helen Ball, Town Clerk for Shrewsbury Town Council, said:

"The Knife Angel has already prompted important conversations across the town about the impact of violence and the role we all have to play in creating safer communities.

"Through a programme of events, education and community engagement, we want to encourage people of all ages to reflect, learn and help create a lasting legacy from its visit to Shrewsbury."

Knife crime remains a significant issue nationally. Research highlights that fear of crime, peer pressure, social media influences and criminal exploitation can all contribute to individuals carrying knives. Whilst enforcement plays an important role, evidence increasingly shows that education, awareness, mentoring and early intervention are vital in preventing violence and supporting young people to make positive choices.

Since arriving in Shrewsbury just over a week ago, the Knife Angel has provided opportunities for schools, community organisations and local partners to engage in meaningful conversations around personal safety, violence prevention and community responsibility. The Town Council has worked alongside partners to ensure that the sculpture's visit leaves a lasting legacy through education, awareness and positive community action.

Civic Reflection Event

As part of the programme, Shrewsbury Town Council will host a Civic Reflection Event on Friday 3 July from 6.30pm in The Square beside the Knife Angel.

The event will be opened by the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Bernie Bentick, and will bring together community representatives and guests to reflect on the themes that the Knife Angel represents, including Community Responsibility, Compassion, Unity, Reflection and Action.

The evening will also feature a special performance by local a cappella group The Men From Off. The ten-piece vocal ensemble will perform Sharp Blade, an original song written in praise of Knife Angel creator Alfie Bradley and inspired by the spirit and message of the Knife Angel. Through music and storytelling, the performance will reflect themes of hope, remembrance, community and positive change, helping to connect local voices with the national anti-violence message that the sculpture represents.

Residents are warmly invited to attend and take part in this moment of collective reflection as the community continues to stand together against violence.

Community Vigil

A community Vigil of Reflection is planned for Thursday 30 July. Further details will be announced in due course.
