A sales executive at a Shropshire caravan and motorhome dealership had the surprise of his life when a satisfied customer presented him with a thank you gift with a difference.

Fred Watling from Kingswinford has a workshop at his home where he makes things and wanted to thank Stuart Edwards at Salop Leisure in Shrewsbury who sold him a new Sterling Eccles Ruby touring caravan. So he made him a wooden wheelbarrow planter and his wife, Margaret, made a beautiful thank you card, which they presented to a surprised Stuart.

“I nearly fell out of my shoes,” was Stuart’s reaction to the gifts. “I have had a few bottles of scotch and wine as thank you gifts but a hand-made wooden wheelbarrow was a new one on me. It was the second touring caravan they had bought from us and they are a lovely couple.

“It must go down as the second most unusual gift I have received. The most unusual was a five kilo bag of grated cheese from a motorhome customer who worked at a cheese factory.”

Mr Watling, a retired brickmaker, said: “It’s the second caravan we have bought from Stuart in the last three years and we wanted to say thank you to him because his customer service is so good.

“I have been making planters to sell as hobby for about 20 years and the money I raise pays for our caravan breaks.”

Having been caravanners for around 30 years, Mr and Mrs Watling spend around 12 weeks of the year visiting different parts of the UK in their touring caravan. They are planning their first break in their new  caravan to Somerset next month.
