Two young members of the accounts team at a leading Shropshire company have helped Shrewsbury College achieve a record breaking 100 per cent pass rate in their first exam of the year.

Emily Buxton, 19 and Will Butler, 21, who work for caravan dealership Salop Leisure in Shrewsbury, passed the financial statements exam together with 13 other part-time students at the college.

It was the first of five exams towards achieving the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) level four qualification. It’s the first time that the college has achieved a 100 per cent success rate in the exam and the national average pass rate is 66.5 per cent.

“We have all worked hard to get where we are and we also have very good tutors,” said Will, who joined Salop Leisure in April, 2013. “It feels fantastic to be part of a record breaking group at the college.”

Both he and Emily hope to complete the accounting qualification this year and then progress to the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification.

Emily joined the company two and half years ago after deciding that sixth form studies were not for her. “I wanted to get an apprenticeship and, as I was already studying business and mathematics in Sixth Form College, an accounts role seemed an obvious choice,” she said.

Stephen Higgins, finance director at Salop Leisure and sister specialist plants business, Love Plants, is delighted by the talented duo’s success.

“I am very pleased that they are doing so well and enjoy working in the accounts department,” he said. “I think we now have the best team we have ever had. There’s such a good spirit amongst the team, they are all academically talented and their dedication to the job shines through.

“With the company continuing to grow, it’s important that we have team members who know the business well. When I started here 21 years ago, we had 45 people on the payroll, now we have 180.”
