I always use a broker for my car and buildings insurance. I have used Howden (and their predecessor A Plan) since 1989.
As a broker, they look through the non-direct market, inc Lloyds, to find the best/most suitable deal for you.
Personally, I don't want the cheapest deal if it means that the insurance co will look to short change you at every step at the very time when you are the most vulnerable; when having to make a claim.
I only want honourable insurance cos, and Howden have never let me down in this regard.
On the rare occasions I have needed to make a claim, they fight my corner. IE You have someone on your side against 'the big bad wolf' (as I see it).
I don't know if I pay a bit more for this service, because I have never tried going direct etc, but I wouldn't mind if it did cost a bit more for the extra peace of mind....
HOWEVER maybe I'm not paying extra anyway.
I think people are crazy to go direct when you can have a broker there genuinely to help you. IE No conflict of interest.
But hey; 'there's ne'er so queer as folk'!

Phone was answered promptly each time I got in contact and queries were dealt with efficiently by polite and friendly staff. Not the absolute cheapest quotes for car and motorcycle but with companies I know of and reasonable excesses! Of course, you can't really rate insurance until you need to make a claim ( hopefully never !) but straightforward so far.

There were no negatives from start to finish of getting my motorhome insured by Howden Insurance. The process was done by phone and email, the process took longer than on a comparison site but that was a positive as you deal with humans and questions go both ways. They saved me £183 on my renewal.

I think the word great is a bit strong ,the ladies and gentleman I spoke to were courteous and polite and changed my insurance quickly and my new policy arrived in the post quickly that is what i expected and that is what I got .one thing I do find with all companies now is when i am answering the simplest of questions my answers are greeted with the phrase that is perfect everything is perfect ,i am just answering a question a simple thank you will suffice .telling somebody my DOB or name does not require the response that is perfect. everybody wants to know how are we doing NHS. DENTIST.INS COMPANIES ,GARAGES everybody you deal with want to know how are we doing it turns a simple process into a long drawn out procedure at a later date . Apart from the above everything is great1
