Lichfield Cathedral is always a place that we will visit if we have time.

But this time was even more special because was the Visit of His Majesty King Charles III, I’m not British but for me was a fabulous experience that I really enjoyed.

The culture, traditions, the place, the people, Is very special be living in this wonderful nations that allow us enjoy about everything.

And this visit was spectacular with thousands of people waiting patiently and polite in the queque for this lovely visit.

The town is a dream, quite, tidy, peaceful, and many artesian place where you can buy whatever you need.

If you never has been in Lichfield, please take your time and go.

Très jolie cathédrale. Malheureusement, les murs sont très sombres et mériteraient une rénovation mais bien entendu, c'est un budget!
Mais ça vaut le détour.

Lichfield Cathedral: When Three Spires is Just Being Greedy
​★★★★★ (Five Stars, but mainly for commitment to being very, very old)
​Lichfield Cathedral is, without a doubt, a masterpiece of mediaeval architecture and an utterly brazen display of over-achievement. While most cathedrals are content to offer a polite, single spire, Lichfield insists on giving you three—a triple-threat of holy Gothic dominance known locally, and rather sweetly, as "The Ladies of the Vale." It’s like arriving at a party and discovering the host is wearing three diamond necklaces.
​The first thing you’ll notice is the age. This place is so old, the stone remembers when central heating was just a flickering candle and a prayer. It’s an excellent place to feel immediately underdressed and slightly inadequate about your life choices. You, a mortal who struggles to remember where they left their keys, are standing beneath the silent judgement of 800 years of structural integrity.
​The Exhibits: Ghosts and Angels
​Inside, the light is glorious, streaming through stained glass that tells intricate biblical stories, often interrupted by a slightly abstract patch of Victorian restoration that looks like a 1980s computer graphic.
​The star attraction, however, remains the famous Lichfield Angel. Discovered buried under the floor, she is eternally enshrined and forever posing for her divine close-up. She serves as a poignant reminder that even in the 8th century, people were worried about their posture. She’s definitely worth the trip, though I’m still deducting half a star because the sheer historical weight made me spill my emergency coffee.
​The Practicalities of Piety
​For those worried about the lack of modern amenities, fear not. This ancient house of worship is perfectly balanced by the necessary presence of a well-stocked gift shop. Here you can buy a commemorative fridge magnet of a gargoyle staring existentially into the middle distance, ensuring your spiritual journey ends with an affordable transaction.
​The overall experience is one of sublime, breathtaking wonder, tempered only by the slight draft and the unavoidable thought: "How long did this take to dust?"
​Final Verdict: Go, be humbled, and then go straight to the nearby pub to warm up. They clearly spared no expense on spires, but heating budgets seem to have been tight since the 13th century.

Music events of an evening, church services of course but also a quiet place to just be.

£10 entrance for two pensioners is too much

Lichfield is a delightful example of those English towns that you wouldn't think big enough to have a massive cathedral and be called a city. It is a large and handsome cathedral in a dark sandstone, with a distinctive three towers. The building suffered badly during the Civil War , but was very effectively restored after the Restoration by the then bishop, Hacket. But the cathedral needed further restoration in 1856 by George Gilbert Scott, but it is hard for the general observer to detect what is Victorian and what is older, so sympathetic was the restoration. One highly successful innovation was the Skidmore screen at the entrance to the choir. A fine Lady Chapel at the East End creates a great sense of distance. It benefits from a fine collection of Belgian stained glass dating from 1530, but only installed here in the 19th century. The Lady Chapel also contains the shrine of St Chad (the first bishop), reinstated in 2022. An unusual feature is the St Chad's Head Chapel, at the east end of the south aisle; built in the 1220s, it was where St Chad's head was kept in the Middle Ages. Finally, during our visit the cathedral was hosting an extraordinary oak table (until May 2026). Made from a section of Fenland Black Oak, the timber is around 5000 years old and measures 13 metres long. It's symbolically called "A Table for the Nation" to evoke unity, heritage and reflection.

What a beautiful and wonderful building this it. You need to visit to enjoy it's splendour.

I could feel the weight of history

Będąc w okolicy trzeba koniecznie tu przyjść. Monumentalna, przepiękna katedra. Charakterystyczne trzy wieże (najwyższa 77m), długość kościoła 113 m i 113 rzeźbionych postaci na fasadzie budynku. Wydaje mi się (nie mogłam znaleźć informacji) , że drzwi wejściowe mają ponad 8 metrów wysokości. Zachwyca projekt i wykonanie wszystkiego zarówno na zewnątrz jak i wewnątrz. Jest tutaj też wspaniały 13 metrowy "Stół dla Narodu". Wykonany niedawno ze znalezionego 5000 letniego dębu. Podobno będzie tutaj przez rok i jest używany jako stół z okazji różnego rodzaju spotkań w kościele.

Such a beautiful peaceful place of worship. I am not a Christian but felt so welcome by all patrons I came across. I was astounded by the amount of colonial history from the empire, from flags, priests, infantry.

Installed a stained glass panel in the south trancept back in 1992. It's still there!

A truly breathtaking cathedral. The Gothic architecture is stunning, with its three spires creating a unique silhouette against the sky. The stone carvings and intricate details on the façade are remarkable, each statue and ornament telling its own story. Inside, the stained glass windows glow with vibrant colors, filling the space with a quiet, almost sacred light. The vaulted ceilings and fine woodwork show an incredible level of craftsmanship. It’s not just a place of worship, but also a masterpiece of art and history,worth taking time to explore slowly.
