A local pub/restaurant has recently changed hands - and just about everything we liked about it. Having read reviews of The Giant's Rest we decided to give it a try after a walk to the top of the Long Man. We were not disappointed. Friendly staff supplying locally sourced ingredients made for a lovely meal. Especially recommend the Wilmington rarebit and the Longman brewery's Crafty Blonde. A wide and varied menu - we will be back

We are fortunate to live in polegate where we are surrounded by some of the best pubs we’ve been to! The Giants Rest is one of them. It was the last pub we went to before lockdown and the first we went back to after. The menu is always fabulous and well priced. They have an excellent chef so we enjoy their lunches as often as we can. It’s not too big, is nicely done out, usually has interesting games on each table and the staff are always chatty and helpful. Can’t fault it.

Local to me, they have really done well implementing Covid- secure practice - service with a smile, food as lovely as ever - nothing is too much trouble - garden seating well spaced too - just what a village pub should be - recommend worth visiting should you be in the area!

After a glorious hike on the South Downs around the Long Man if Wilmington, we were delighted by the beer and superb roast at this modest looking little pub. Great service was a bonus.

Since we moved back to Sussex this is in my top 3 of favourite Sussex pubs. It's cosy and friendly, fire in the stove, local Longman beers on tap and excellent delicious food that isn't a silly price. Never had a dud meal yet. Fab roast the Sunday before last, delicious pies with mash or chips and veg today. Lots of gravy when asked for. I cannot fault this place. Yes it's doggy and child friendly too. Note the car park is small, but the road outside is not busy so easy to park.

Popped in here with some friends on a Saturday afternoon. We found it to be a lovely pub with a warm open fire and a friendly welcome from the staff. A good selection of drinks, a menu with plenty of choices plus a board full of specials. We ordered lunch and it took a little while to arrive however when it tastes that good you know the delay was because it was all freshly cooked. I was spoilt for choice, so many things I'd have liked to have tried but I opted for the sausage and bean casserole served with mash and leek. It was truly delicious. My friends were all similarly impressed with their choices. As the mains were so good it would have been foolish to avoid desert, so we didn't and they were also all lovely. I went for the date and ginger pudding, an excellent choice imo.
All in all we couldn't have been happier with our choice of lunch venue and will definitely return next time we are in the area. In fact I'd happily take a long detour just to put myself in the area.

Table for 10 for lunch, had some of the tastiest pies ever, pastry light and short, fillings luscious and gravy smothered it all in loveliness
Great place to eat, have a coffee and socialise. Roaring open fire in the winter months or sit in the garden with beautiful views of the countryside in the summer. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and great home cooked food. What more could you want!

We were staying in Alfriston. Walked to this pub a few times. Staff were lovely, welcoming & very friendly. Food was very good. Only complaint was pub was cold, although they had open fire it was not throwing out much heat. We were sitting my warm radiator as it was still cold. Not great people eating with their coats on lol. The guy that served us was amazing. So Friendly, not only to us but our dog too.
He was doing his best to get that fire burning. We arrived at 12.30 on first visit, 2nd one was 1.30.
To improve this. IMO they should start fire before they open at 11am. As is it very cold when clients arrive.
Saying all that. I love this pub & food & guy behind bar is brilliant.
The fact people are sitting in pub with coats on not a great sign. Maybe turn up the central heating.
Fire very romantic but not if you are still cold which I think quite of lot people were.
Saying that love your pub. Food amazing & staff even better
Great food, great service, darts, quality rotating selection of craft beers and South Downs Cider(all properly kept)! What more could you want or need???

I have had a meal here on quiz night and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Questions were not so hard it hurt my head but just tough enough to get me smiling at knowing the answer.
Loved it so much came back for lunch and it was just as good. If it did not involve a drive for me it would be my local for sure :)
This pub is family friendly and date night fun! We regularly visit and particularly enjoy happy hour, especially on a Friday night. We have enjoyed many a family meal and haven’t been disappointed. We even asked the lovely chef James to provide the food at our wedding which he very kindly did and the veggie chilli was so popular... anyone in the area we would highly recommend the Giants Rest!! Not to forget very friendly locals too!!

The staff are friendly and helpful, they put the ramp down outside for us to access the pub, always a good move!
We had three snacks/starters. Two were fantastic, flavoursome and a good amount. However the prawns in garlic butter were, umm disappointing. So limited, 4 prawns on a bed lettuce, with a tad of garlic. I would have hoped they were skin on and dripping in garlic butter, no, just looked like a cheap prawn cocktail. But not cheap! On the other hand, the chicken and satay sauce was 3 large chicken strips with tonnes of satay sauce also on a bed of lettuce, for cheaper than the prawns. And the rarebit was substantial too, so pick and choose what to eat. I should have remembered any prawn dish here does not meet my standards.

All that is good about a pub. Great food (including gluten free as Landlords daughter is a coeliac he completely understands), good beer and wine, music, atmosphere, dog friendly, clean spacious accommodation with heart breakfast included in very reasonable price. Give it a try, it’s set in a lovely village surrounded by beautiful walks but easy access to main road. All very charming

Fine as a pub. Tried hard to please our lunching group. Just a niggle about parking: our leader had arranged (as we usually do) that car sharing would be taking place, those eating could park in pub car park, those not eating to park on road. Yet we were mostly all made to park on the road 'to make it easier for our disabled patrons'. Didn't see any disabled patrons that day, let along a party of them that would have packed out the carpark.

My husband and I stayed for a few nights at this pub.
Everybody was really friendly. Our room was very nice. And the best of all was the food which was really delicious. Every morning we had an excellent cooked breakfast.
Thank you so much for everything.

Great location - easy 15-min walk to the famous Long Man.
First visit for a while, but food, drink, and hospitality still first-class.
Don't leave without trying the home-smoked salmon pate and duck - outstanding.

We were looking for lunch when we turned into Wilmington and found the Giant's Rest. After ordering refreshing elderflower fizz, we relaxed outside in the shade of the umbrella at our table. Our cooked food and desserts were excellent and the prices reasonable, the main courses being particularly good value. There were five specials in addition to the main menu, with a good range of dishes.

Dog and people friendly! Excellent food and attentive service, the home smoked duck and bacon is second to none! Could not find any fault in this most accomodating pub, most highly recommended.
