Lovers in Wales have two bites of the Cherry with St Dwynwen and St Valentine

St Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers similar to St Valentines but St Dwynwen’s Day is celebrated earlier on 25th January.  This year  the 25th falls on a Monday so why not celebrate the weekend before.  There are some lovely places to eat.  Why not try Gardd Y Nos (Carmarthen Journal’s restaurant of the year 2009) of Diavolo’s the new Italian Restaurant in Cardigan and if you would like a stunning romantic view do try the Links Restaurant at Newport Links Golf Club. (for details on all these restaurants click here)

Let me tell you a little about St Dwynwen.  She was one of Bychan Brycheiniog’s 24 daughters and apparently one of the prettiest.  Dwynwen fell in love with  Prince Mawlon Dafodrill but it was doomed from the start as her father had already arranged another suitor.

Heartbroken Dwynwen begged God to make her forget him.  God turned Maelon into a block of ice and gave Dwynwen a sweet potion designed to block her memory of Maelon.  God also gave Dwynwen three wishes, the first of which was for Maelon to be thawed!  The second was that God was to meet the hopes and dreams of true lovers and the third was the Dwynwen should never marry.  All three were fulfilled and Dwynwen then devoted herself to God’s service and in doing so founded a convent on Llanddwyn off  Anglesey.  Dwynwen died in 465 AD.  For more information on St Dwynwen click here

If not going out why not buy a gift for your loved one or send flowers. Pink Orchid is a fab florist.  Elliana’s has some wonderful gifts especially lovely jewellery.  An added bonus is Ellianas is offering 25% off all items and some up to 50% off.
Mundos a lovely new gift shop in the High Street has an eclectic array of gifts and is well worth a visit. For details of these businesses click here

Happy St Dwynwen's Day to lovers everywhere!
