Youngsters given work opportunities with Castle Heating and Gas Services
Back in 2003 Gethin Gould-Davies started the firm, (based in Newcastle Emlyn) soon his wife Sarah joined forces with him and together they have built a successful business with a solid reputation for efficiency and reliability. The couple now employ seven members of staff including youngsters that have been taken on as apprentices. Gethin and Sarah believe that this is the key to their success.
"We think it is important to train our engineers to work to the high standards that we expect, so we can have full confidence in their abilities and how they deal with our customers."
Sarah was recently interviewed by The Carmarthen Journal and added,
"It's nice to give these opportunities to young people, during a time when there aren't really that many chances for them. It also makes them more loyal to us, because we have supported them right from the start, and hopefully it will mean they're more likely to stay with us long term."
Gethin and Sarah employ the youngsters from the age of 16 or 17 and they learn invaluable skills through actual work experience. Their learning is then supported by the local colleges one day a week.
Whilst this is a win win situation taking on an apprentice requires a different skill set to those needed as a plumber on a day-to-day basis. You need to slow down, take time to explain a particular task and let them have a go themselves! Fortunately these are skills Gethin has and it makes a huge difference, not only to the apprentices, but to the local community too.
