Over 4,000 people crowded into Cambridge's Market Square last night for the Christmas lights switch on at the Guildhall, which features appearances by both Father Christmas and X Factor band, Prince and Rogues.

The band, who switched on the lights, were mobbed by fans as they performed a selection of hits to a packed crowd eager to get Christmas started early.

Organised by Love Cambridge, the Grand Arcade and News and Heart 103, the event was a resounding success, with families travelling from neighbouring towns and villages to enjoy the Christmas spirit.

Cameron Neilson, singer with Princes and Rogues, was delighted by the enthusiasm of the Cambridge crowd: “It was an amazing gig. The crowd were jumping around and really getting in the spirit of Christmas."

“There was a really good vibe and it was our best gig so far. I’ve always wanted to visit Cambridge for a holiday, so it was great to be here.”
