In the aftermarket engine tuning business, three phrases are often used interchangably. These are OBD tuning, chip tuning and ecu remapping. As such, it's easy for individuals to get confused with what they're talking about. In our last Mobile Remaps blog we looked at answering the question 'what is chip tuning?' and so in this blog, we're going to look at clarifying OBD tuning and OBD remapping for you.

OBD is an acronym. It stands for On Board Diagnostics. And, courtesy of regulations that came into effect in the year 2000, the OBD port which garages and engine tuners plug into to read error codes stored on your car ecu and read the software that controls engine performance so it can be modified for improvement, is located within 60cm of the steering wheel. In practice, this usually is located under the drivers side dashboard above the accelerator pedal.

So nice and simply... OBD tuning and OBD remapping is simply enhancing engine performance through altering the software paramaters that control the engine using a tool that is plugged into the OBD port of your vehicle. Is it the same as engine remapping? No. And yes. But no... As said at the beginning of this blog the term is often used interchangably with ecu remapping and chip tuning. And whilst it can mean the same thing it's not actually the same thing. Being a bit literal about this, OBD tuning is the method by which you undertake engine remapping otherwise known as ecu remapping.

For more information on engine remapping your car whether it's remapping for performance, obd tuning for economy [see what we're doing here!] or having your chip tune for a mix of economy and performance, then contact Mobile Remaps where we'll be happy to answer all your questions and advise you on the best remap for your needs for your car.
