Redecorating an entire room can be time-consuming and costly. But if you're looking for a way to change the mood of a room without redoing the entire colour scheme, a feature wall presents the ideal solution.

A feature wall is simply one wall picked out as an accent by painting or papering it in a different manner to the rest of the room, and if your existing colour scheme is predominantly neutral, then it’s the perfect opportunity to add colour without overpowering the rest of the room.

Although feature walls are most commonly used on chimney breast walls,  with the trend moving more and more towards ‘open plan’ living, they can also be used to define space and avoid large (potentially boring) expanses of the same colour.  And whilst it may seem logical to select a dominant wall for your feature, don’t overlook the benefits of highlighting what previously may have been a neglected area of your living space.  Extensions often fall victim to neglect simply because then can create long, narrow spaces, or rooms that don’t quite ‘flow’ naturally.  Creating matching or complementary feature walls can bring these areas together and encourage you to utilise space previously not used to its full potential.

A dark colour will make the feature wall advance and appear closer, while a lighter shade does the opposite. If you want to make a long room appear squarer, use darker colours to draw the wall into the room. Similarly, if a room or part of a room gets little natural light and can appear gloomy, then a light, surface will improve this, and metallic or reflective designs even more so.

The absolute beauty of a feature wall is how, with the addition of a few new cushions, inexpensive lamps and other soft furnishings and entire room can be given a whole new look on a budget and in a very short space of time.  This can quite literally be done over a weekend.  And because of this limited cost and disruption, you can be as adventurous as you like as you aim to create something unique.  What’s the worst that can happen? A feature wall is not difficult to change!
