A bluebell walk is taking place this Sunday (11th May) at Borough farm near Mortehoe, home of celebrated local shepherd David Kennard and his sheepdog Mist.
Mortehoe’s bluebell walk allows visitors to wander through some outstanding North Devon coastal countryside: it aims to celebrate the arrival of spring by showcasing the beautiful and abundant spring flowers in the valley.
Home to the Channel 5 television series ‘Mist - Sheepdog Tales’, Borough Farm has hosted the popular event in previous years’ and attracted over 300 people. Visitors may also get the chance to meet Mist and Jake, two of the sheepdogs from the series.
All proceeds from the walk will go to Mortehoe Museum, formerly Mortehoe Heritage Centre. The museum, based in the centre of Mortehoe, celebrates the history and culture of the village and provides information on local shipwrecks, an introduction to the flora and fauna of North Devon, the birth and development of tourism, farming and country skills.
Delicious cream teas and a selection of homemade cakes will also be available.
Mary Lethbridge, Chairman of the Friends of Mortehoe Museum Committee, said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled that the event will be held at Borough Farm and we’d like to thank David and Debbie Kennard for their ongoing support.
“It is not a formal guided walk, but allows visitors to freely explore the bluebells and enjoy the magnificent scenery. Previous events have been a great success and we hope even more people can come along this time.”
The mile long walk is fairly steep and can be slippery in wet weather. Those who mobility difficulties can proceed to the farm and then take a short walk, mainly on the level, to a viewing point over the valley.
Gates will open to visitors at 2pm and will close at 5pm. The cost of the walk is £3 for adults – there is no charge for children under 12.
To reach Borough Farm, take the turning to Lincombe and Lee on the B3343 and almost immediately take the first left along a private road to reach the parking area.
