A Degree is no Guarantee of Local Work in North Devon

North Devon has a growing number of young people who have successfully achieved degrees, yet remain unemployed. The impact of this is increased pressure in other areas of the labour market, as competition for jobs remains high.

Some local graduates are currently employed, but find themselves in jobs where they are not utilising all their skills. Meanwhile, other graduates have been applying for apprenticeships, only to find that they are unable to get to the interview stage. One theory for this may be because employers are offered government incentives for other applicants, making employing a graduate a less financially viable option for their business. If the graduate is unaware of this, it can affect their confidence.

The local Employment & Skills Plan aims to retain local talent and improve employment opportunities across North Devon and the wider area. To support our local graduates in finding work, Jobcentre Plus will be hosting a Graduate Event in Barnstaple. It has joined together with the University of Exeter, the Employment & Skills Board, the National Careers Service and local employers to offer guidance to those with degrees, from all age groups, that are out of work or looking for a change of career.

At this event, Jobcentre Plus will be introducing their Universal Job Match service, due to launch in November. The University of Exeter will be supporting new graduates and discussing their Graduate Business Partnerships, which offer financial incentives to employers that host an internship.

Careers South West provide information on post-graduate study, where to look for graduate vacancies and how to make the best of your degree subject when making applications for employment on paper, or on-line.

On offer at the Graduate Event are also Skills Health Checks and CV workshops, information on starting your own business and the grants available, and an employers’ master-class with guidance from local HR managers.

It will be held on THURSDAY 1 NOVEMBER, 1.00 – 4.00pm at Barnstaple Jobcentre. To book call Tracie on 01271 395 477 or email tracie.hennessey@jobcentreplus.gsi.gov.uk
