The Central Weekend to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee takes place from Saturday 2 June to Tuesday 5 June 2012, with celebratory activities throughout the UK and across the Commonwealth.

The Jubilee Weekend features an extra Bank Holiday for the Diamond Jubilee, with the late May Bank Holiday moved one week later, thereby making a 4-day long weekend.

Events in Abingdon-on-Thames

There will be numerous local events that we probably don’t know about, so please let us know and we’ll keep updating this blog! Below are listed those that we HAVE been able to unearth:

Saturday 2 June

1pm – 4pm Fun in the Park and Dance Festival, in the Abbey Grounds. Free entry

2pm Children’s Treasure Hunt, St. Peter’s Church, Drayton. Refreshments, raffle, tea, cakes

Evening – Jubilee Dance at the Guildhall. 3 course buffet with wine and dancing to Nevada. Tickets £29.50 from Abingdon Information Centre

7.30pm Sunningwell Festival – 3rd Degree LeBurn and The Limitations

Sunday 3rd June

10.00am Civic Service in St Helen’s Church

12.30pm Ock St Street Party. Part of the national Big Jubilee Lunch. Open to all but you need to book a space. Email jubilee@abingdon.gov.uk for more details

6pm Bun Throwing (6000 buns!) from the County Hall Museum roof to the Market Place

7pm Proms in the Park in the Abbey Grounds (gates open at 5pm). Music starts 7pm, proms and fireworks at 9pm. Tickets £2.50/£1 from Information Centre.

7.30pm Sunningwell Festival - The David Rees Williams Trio

Monday 4th June

10.30 am Tours of Abingdon starting from the Market Place. Various themes

11.00, 12.00, 2pm County Hall Museum Tours £4/£3 Booking needed.

4pm The Big Screen – Abbey Grounds Live coverage of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert (BBC) followed by firework display (finishes 10pm). Tickets £2.50/£1

7.30pm Sunningwell Festival - Parallel Blondie and Silver

8pm – Jubilee Beacon and Hot Air Balloons, Culham Park. 

10.15pm Lighting of the Beacon – Abingdon is one in the national chain of beacons to be lit. Check council website for exact location nearer the time (Prob Market Place)

Tuesday 5th June

Morning  - Service of Thanksgiving from St Paul’s Cathedral – Abbey Grounds. Free event. Refreshments, beer tent, pig roast, children’s roundabout.

7.30pm Sunningwell Festival -  Spiers and Boden
