So he's put a ring on it and you're compiling the guest list, figuring out seating plans, the venue, dresses and suits, and transport... So what's missing? The food, of course!

Nowadays you can pretty much please yourself when it comes to choosing how you cater for your wedding guests. Formal sit down, buffet, stand up bowl food, barbecue... it’s your choice! The only rule is that you should never leave your guests feeling hungry or in need of refreshment. Guests who are starving and thirsty aren’t going to be having a good time. Fact!

So what are the options? Anything is possible these days, whatever the budget.

There really is no limit to food choices at your wedding, but here are some helpful pointers you should probably consider to make the event a whole lot more fun and delicious!

Pick a theme

Stick to your own personal favourites or cater for all with classic dishes. Maybe you like Indian or Mexican food? Maybe you love a classic English afternoon tea and want to go for finger sandwiches and scones? Maybe you got engaged in Spain and want a range of tapas? Maybe you love pink and want everything colour-dyed pink? (Eeek). The options are endless!

Bear the season in mind

Having a summer wedding? Fire up a barbecue and serve ice-cream cones for dessert! Having a winter wedding? Keep guests toasty with warm, hearty dishes. Spring brings delicious new vegetables, so consider serving fresh veg with your favourite fish or meat. Autumn can be either warm or chilly – so why not serve a light meal with a rich, tempting dessert? We’re thinking chocolate fondant or sticky toffee pudding... Mmmmm...

Time of day

Sticking to the rule of making sure your guests are always well fed and refreshed, be sympathetic to the time of day that your wedding takes place. If you’re tying the knot in the morning, consider serving breakfast nibbles for guests before the ceremony, such as mini croissants and tea and coffee. Lunch time tummy rumbles can be kept at bay by providing guests with finger sandwiches or canapés prior to the nuptials, whilst evening ceremonies mean your guests are more likely to have eaten prior to the wedding, which means nibbles and cake should be enough!

If there are a large number of kids attending your wedding, you definitely need to consider their needs (which, as we all know, can be extremely fussy!). Food destined to go down well with kids is as follows: plain sandwiches, cocktail sausages or goujons, pizza, cake, sweets, chocolate. Whilst we don’t advise allowing children to eat ALL of the above, they are bound to go down well with most small people. Boxes of raisins, yoghurts and strawberries are also generally a safe bet for a ‘healthier’ addition.

Party Favours

It’s always nice to leave a wedding with a keepsake or, well, cake. Party bags aren’t just for children! Make sure your guest leaves with a piece of cake (if there’s sufficient cake to go around), bubbles for the kids and a small keepsake for the day. Maybe a photograph? Maybe a keyring? Maybe a hangover aid kit for the morning after? It’s the thought that counts!
