The inaugural Asian Curry Awards gala dinner recently took place at the Lancaster Hotel in London. The event, hosted by Federation of Bangladeshi Caterers UK (FoBC), highlighted the greatest achievements of the UK’s Asian catering trade.
Commenting on the awards Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, said “The FoBC Gala Dinner is a fitting way to celebrate and promote the success of the UK curry industry. It helps to recognise the excellence of some of the UK’s favourite restaurants and takeaways and the outstanding contribution of key figures in the sector to the UK economy and the UK culinary experience! This occasion rightly recognises not only the important of the Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani sector but also Chinese, Malaysian and Thai catering communities whose contribution is also outstanding.”
We’re particularly delighted to say that Saif Alom and Munjir Alom, who together run Namada Restaurant in Southfields, were jointly awarded the highly prestigious Young Restaurateurs of the Year award for this region.
On winning the award, Saif Alom said “I can’t tell you how delighted and humbled we are to win this prestigious award. I think that perhaps one of the reasons we won it was precisely because we have only recently established Namada in the South West London area, and the hard work and endeavours we have put into the restaurant to make it a feature on the culinary landscape have now been recognised with this high accolade. I can assure you that we’ll be displaying the certificate and trophy prominently in our restaurant.”
Presented by Sky News broadcaster and presenter Lukwesa Burak, the awards event was attended by hundreds of leading restaurateurs and business owners from the world of Asian catering, as well as being supported and attended by a number of special guests and VIPs including, amongst several others:
Richard, Earl of Bradford (Chairman of the Restaurant Association), Lord Sheikh (Chairman of Conservatives Muslim Forum), Rt Hon Simon Hughes MP (Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats), His Excellency Dr Sayeedur Rahman Khan (High Commissioner for Bangladesh), Mr Wan Zeidi Wan Abdullah (Deputy High Commissioner for Malaysia), Mr Zhao Lei (First Secretary & Consul – Embassy of the People’s Republic of China), John Walker (Chairman of FSB), Teddy Chan (Chairman Of Malaysian Restaurant Association), Raja Badrul Nijan (Malaysia Trade Commissioner) and Hitan Metha (CEO British Asian Trust).
The judging panel for the awards, chaired by Richard, 7th Earl of Bradford, was made up of a number of experts and influencers in the catering field: Reiko Hara, Piers Adamson, Pat Chapman, Sri Owen, Bernard Yeoh, Saad Ghazi and Councillor Thomas Chan.
The awards were filmed for a documentary due to be distributed on a number of Asian Channels – Channel S, ATN Bangla, Channel I and NTV ‐ across the Sky network reaching Asian communities across the UK, Europe and Asia.
Namada Restaurant was also voted as a WINNER at The Spice Times National Restaurant Awards held at the prestigious London Hilton, Park Lane. Namada won the accolade as the best Indian restaurant in the area around Southfields, south west London
Congratulations Saif and Munjir – having eaten at Namada several times ourselves we can rightly say that this award and recognition are totally deserved.
