This is a small museum with some really good artefacts. It has some nationally important Roman and Prehistoric collections as well as rooms dedicated to the Monmouth Rebellion and Somerset Rifles.
They encourage a £5 donation, which will also give you access to any special exhibitions they have at the time.
Great for adults. Probably lacks "wow" factor for pre-teens. Staff knowlegable and friendly.

This is a beautiful gem in the middle of Taunton. I really enjoyed looking out of the windows of the Great Hall onto the other historical buildings within the vicinity and imagining what it must have looked like in the past.
I thought the focus would be the history of the buildings, but it includes going back to fossils and treasures discovered in and around Somerset. It brought to life the rich history of the region.
It's very well laid out, modern and well maintained, with lovely facilities- a little cafe with indoor and outdoor seating.
Recommended to pass an hour or two.

Excellent display of prehistoric exhibits. Pride of place to the Roman mosaic floor. Most interedting Military History Section. Not a big museum but well worth a few hours and the café serves decent coffee.

Beautiful courtyard with lovely coffee and lovely staff. Spent a very pleasant lunchtime. I wasn't hungry but the next table, a good four feet away, had salad sandwiches and I could smell the freshness! Will return.

Visited on Saturday and really enjoyed it. The museum is free, interesting, and well worth a visit. The exhibits are engaging and informative, and I'd happily recommend it to others. My only criticism is the gift shop, where some prices seemed very high (£9 for a bookmark, for example). If you're visiting with young children, be aware that souvenir costs can add up quickly. Overall, a great museum and definitely worth seeing.

Very popular with kids and their guardians. Someone must have spent ages and ages cutting out bits of paper for making Gruffalo masks. Well done to them. Nice cafe adjacent

We really liked it here. The way it is set up is very good. From Roman right through to the making of somerset. Lots of historic detail about the courts and other events around the castle.
Being pensioners, we were pleased that it was all free. The cafe was closed, but it looked lovely, plus there was a lovely outside area within the courtyard. We would highly recommend a visit.

I went specifically for the Roger Fry art exhibition which is on until July 2026. There is an entry fee for this so I purchased tickets online (£4 instead of £5) Admission to the actual museum is by donation - suggested £5.
The Roger Fry exhibition was excellent. Not an artist I was aware of but I very much enjoyed what was on offer.
Having never been to the museum before (despite having lived in Somerset for 10 years now) I did have a look around and had a wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Highlights were the magnificent Cheddar Broach and the very impressive and complete High Ham Roman Mosaic. I will visit again as I had to leave to ensure I didn't overrun my Car Park time.
