Visited for lunch in September 2017. Very nice food & friendly staff. Dog friendly. Nice atmosphere in a pretty village.

This beautiful pub is set in such a beautiful village in Suffolk. It serves food until 8.30pm on Sunday evenings which is such a boon as so many pubs do not any longer. We found it busy with a lovely atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and the food was not only presented well, but the ingredients were very fresh too. I had Sunday roast and all the food was served piping hot.

Been here many times but today we were really impressed with the service . I am lactose intolerant but had a beautiful roast dinner with my own vegetables without butter . After our meal I was given a dairy free dessert menu ... loved it , thank you !

We were taken to The Crown by friends who live in Cambridgeshire for Sunday lunch.
This pub is set in picturesque surroundings, with huge outdoor, child friendly grounds.
All four of us chose the pork dish, which was beautifully presented, accompanied by crispy roast potatoes and a good selection of vegetables, plus extra gravy!
Plentiful, pleasant staff, plus good food - we will be back.

Pleasant friendly staff, good beer, OK bar food, lovely Suffolk village, what's not too like, oh I almost forgot it's very dog friendly with tables dedicated to people with dogs which suited us, Yep give them a try if you are in the area

Beautiful interior and grounds, equally good service and staff plus the food is original and the menu is very affordable!
They just need to get some chilli sauce!
Other than that, a perfect lunch and would highly highly recommend. Top dollar.
Thanks again, we'll be back.

First visit to The Crown in Hartest for many years. Very good food attention to detail excellent knowledgable waitress.
Costs a little more than average but the quality is worth it. Evening meal, four interesting delicate tasting meals beautiful presentation.
I always select menu items that are difficult to cook at home. Give them a try.

We visited the crown in hartest on a very hot evening ,we found it to be a nice clean and well presented , menu a bit confusing all crammed together, good choices to choose from . However waited an hour after ordering our food to arrive which seemed to be to long as it wasn't that busy, the food however was worth the wait , we all enjoyed our evening at the crown , we would return for an evening out with our friends 👌

For a couple having a nice sunday lunch in a gorgeous village, this is the acme of of what it should be- pub garden, nice wines, friendly waitresses, and good value for money food. My coley was maybe a touch pricy for £15, but the roast beef would have been a good bet, and the desserts were yum. Management ok with well behaved kids and dogs indoors - I was happy with my c£18 a head lunch there.

I ate here on a Friday lunchtime. There were quite a few tables taken. Staff were friendly and welcoming.
Lunch took a while to arrive although we weren't in a hurry. We enjoyed asparagus risotto, chargrilled halloumi and duck. the halloumi was a little too charred for my liking but a good dish.

We were staying with friends who lived nearby so decided to take them for dinner at the Crown. Great gastropub in beautiful location with lots of outdoor space. Tucked away in a corner so easy to drive past.
The menu has a wide variety of food including vegetarian. Two of us had the pork belly and chorizo pie - this is what a real pie should be like - amazing. All the mains were delicious and generous portions. One person had the trifle and it was just awesome. Four people with wine and beer - £83 which I thought was very good value.
We were served by a lovely, very polite young lady who was very patient with us as we were talking for a while before ordering.
She told us that the Wednesday Pie and Pint finishes this week.

Great meal this evening and we took advantage of the Pie and Drink deal. I had the most delicious Fish Pie with a pastry pie case. Yum! We love this pub and always had a good meal and service.

The Crown is in a lovely village setting with outdoor seating and a children's play area as well as a large bar and restaurant. We took our toy poodle and notice that there were lots of diners with dogs too. (And there area lovely walks from the pub) The staff were all attentive and very friendly on our arrival and throughout the meal. We had two courses from the lunch time menu, 3 fish and chips and 1 blade steak. All were well cooked tasted great too. We all had sweets which were also good but could have done with more custard/cream.

I've been here on many occasions living just a few miles away. The Crown is a traditional English pub serving good quality pub staples albeit with a contemporary twist. The building is fantastic, sympathetically restored, with a roaring fire in the grate on cold winter nights. Large garden with great facilities for children in the summer. The Crown benefits from being part of the small, local Brewshed group of pubs so it's open longer hours than most village pubs and serves the great range of Brewshed beers.

Picture perfect village and pub. Hartest is off the beaten track but worth a visit. Thick wooden beams tick. Friendly polite service tick. Good reasonably priced food tick ( soup and a sandwich very tasty and filling ) Local ales tick. Dog friendly 2 ticks.
Visited at lunchtime and not too busy with many families outside enjoying the sunshine and play area.

We’ve eaten here a few times over the years and have always enjoyed it. On this recent visit the food was good, but – and perhaps we just had bad luck on this day – the speed at which the food came was too slow. We had starters: lovely potted crab (highlight of the meal), a good soup of the day and well-cooked whitebait, but after that the wait for the main course meant that it was 75 minutes from arriving in the restaurant (at 12.45pm) to getting our main course (after 14.00pm). Fine fish and chips, and the burgers were deemed tasty. Excellent homemade chips too. But by the time we’d eaten our main course we’d run out of time and gave up on ordering puddings. Perhaps, as I say, we hit a day when the kitchen didn’t quite get everything right (it wasn’t that the restaurant was unreasonably busy): the food was good, but the speed of its arrival on this particular day left something to be desired. But it's a lovely spot, and from past experience we had bad luck on this visit. So do give The Crown a try if you haven't been here before, but maybe don't look at your watch...

My husband and I popped into The Crown for Wednesday Pie and a Pint. I have a severe nut allergy now which is a problem with eating out. The staff here were superb in giving me confidence the meal I had would not be cross contaminated with anything nutty which, for me, goes a long way to reduce my anxiety when eating out. When the food came it was delicious. Service was good. In fact, we went back two weeks later to again, superb service and food. This is a pub for everyone with a lovely big garden for children. We will be taking ours in the summer.

Came to the crown for a spot of lunch after house hunting in bury St. edmonds and was not disappointed.
It was an absolute beautiful spring afternoon so we decided to sit outside in the fantastic open garden. I had the duck spring roll special starter which was great and tasted superb. And the smoked tofu main I had was full of flavour and worked perfectly with the puy lentils.
Will definitely return!

Visited last night, booked a table online and met up with some friends who we regularly eat out with around Suffolk. We decided that this was the best meal we've had in a very long time. Friendly and attentive service throughout. Some unusual flavours on the menu - who would want bubble and squeak soup? My husband did and thought it was lovely! He followed that with the duck and then squeezed in a sticky toffee pudding. We all left saying it was a very good venue choice. The chocolate sundae is worth leaving a little bit of room for. It's our friends turn to choose the venue next time, and we never go back to the same place twice, always wanting to try somewhere new to us, but I think the Crown could be the exception!

I come to the Crown whenever I visit the Bury St Edmunds area because I know I won't be disappointed. The food is always excellent with both a local and a modern twist. Pork as you would expect, always featured on the menu, as does fish.
The biggest problem is choosing what to have, simply because I know I will enjoy my whatever I choose. Today I have opted for potted crab with smoked salmon and horseradish cream for a starter and lemon and harissa poussin with couscous and chicory for the main course washed down with the excellent local Brewshed IPA. The starter was excellent and served with a nice little (and still very warm) wholemeal loaf.
The main was equally pleasing. The chicken was succulent and. Wet tasty having been drizzled with lemon oil and harissa.
Rounded off with sticky toffee pudding ( I know , I shouldn't have)
All in all a very pleasant meal.
Other options on the new menu included such delights as porkbelly and chorizo pie, duck with rhubarb, bream with polenta chips and vegetarian options.
All the above are presented by very welcoming and friendly staff in a wonderful environment ( I had my meal in front of a roaring log fire by the bar).
I was very happy to re-acquaint myself with this hidden gem of a restaurant. Well worth the drive from Bury.
The free wifi is handy as well as it is in an O2 desert.

We had a family lunch at at The Crown, nice menu and well presented food, slightly crowded room with a big family table of 20 behind us, service slightly slow and occasional reminders about drinks not arriving but overall nice location in a lovely spot.

Our first visit here and I can't wait to go back. The staff are lovely - a smiley welcome as we entered and great service throughout - relaxed, attentive and so pleasant.
On Wednesdays, there is a "Pie and a Pint" offer for £10 - choice of meat, fish or veggie pastry pie with veg (cabbage and mash on that day) - my husband went for the fish pie - lovely pastry and good filling and nicely plated up - we were warned this would take 25 minutes as all pies are freshly baked - all the better for it. I had a small plate of potted smoked haddock with toast and I ordered a side of braised red cabbage - this was hot and comforting. The potted haddock was delicious, but could do without the "tomato foam" - the dish is so good, it does not need this cheffy addition - I felt it was added just to impress - it detracted, rather - but that is a very minor gripe - all in all, it was such a pleasant experience. The best bitter was great and I had a good glass of red - but please serve it in the appropriate red wine glass - not some goldfish bowl - so hard to drink from! (Another minor gripe!).Do try the Crown - we went in happily and left even more so, quite satisfied - and ready for a walk around the lovely village.
