Building is under way at Shrewsbury College to create a new commercial salon to sit alongside the new Hair, Beauty and Holistic Therapies training facilities at London Road as part of the £15m redevelopment of the site.

The training salons are moving from the Radbrook Campus to the London Road Campus from September 2014. Alongside these new state-of-the-art training facilities, the College is opening a new industry-standard, commercial salon offering a wide range of salon services and luxury treatments provided by qualified experts.

Salon professional products will also be used and be on sale to the public. Both salons are due to open in September.

The commercial salon will be open all year round, including evenings and weekends, and the College is launching a competition to find a name for it. The training facility will also take on the new name and be known as its adjoining ‘Academy’.

Jackie Swan, curriculum leader for Hair and Beauty, said: “Elements training salon has been based at the Radbrook Campus for nearly 30 yearsand has built up an excellent reputation both as a training facility and a working salon.

“The addition of new commercial salon, run by industry professionals and a qualified salon manager is a real coup for the College and will add to the fantastic facilities here.

“It will also give our students the drive to strive for experience in the salon as only the best students will be given the chance to work alongside the professionals. This will strengthen their industry experience as it’s imperative that students leave us with more than just their qualifications, ready for their next steps, whether that’s onto further training or employment.”

People are being asked to visit the College’s website at www.shrewsbury.ac.uk/salon where they can fill in a form with their suggestions or download the form and drop it in to reception at either Radbrook or London Road. Entry forms will also be available at both receptions.

The winner will get to see their name turned into branding for the new salon on signage and literature, as well as receiving an iPad mini, courtesy of Shropshire – based Chartered Building Surveying and Project Management practice Edward Finch Partnership who have been working with the College on its redevelopment for the past four years. The winner will also receive a treatment of their choice at the new salon.

Entries must be received by 4pm on Friday, May 16. The winning name will be chosen by a panel of judges including some of our Hair, Beauty & Therapies students, curriculum leader Jackie Swan and tutor Melanie Pountney and Principal, Steve Wain.
