When you think of a hot tub, no doubt you’ll envisage crystal clear water with vivaciously rolling bubbles, inviting you in.

However, it’s likely that every hot tub owner will experience cloudy, overly foamy or even milky looking water at some point. Luckily, this is nothing to worry about and these issues can easily be corrected.

If you are unsure how to rectify the problem of cloudy water in your hot tub, then we are here to help. Read on for our simple tips.

Fixing Cloudy Hot Tub Water

If you encounter cloudy, foamy or milky water in your hot tub and can’t see the bottom of the hot tub, don’t panic. There are a number of different factors that could cause these issues, but all of them can be corrected. Key causes of poor water clarity include:

  • Unbalanced sanitiser, PH or Alkalinity levels. Low levels of sanitiser is the most likely cause.
  • A build up of organic debris or insoluble particles
  • Dirty filters preventing effective filtration of the water
  • Aeration with jets on

To clear cloudy water, you should take the following steps:

  • Check your hot tub filters – it could be that small particles are not being picked up by your filters. Give your filters a thorough rinse or soak them in a filter cleaning solution overnight.
  • Check the levels – if checking your hot tub filters does not fix the problem, then you should check the water balance. Is the PH at the right level? If not, adjust the PH balance until it is correct. You should also check that the sanitiser is at the correct level – high sanitiser levels can often be a cause of poor water clarity.
  • Shock your hot tub – Shocking your hot tub water using a non-chlorine shock allows you to clear the water quickly without affecting your sanitiser levels too much. A non-chlorine shock works alongside your hot tub filter to clear away floating particles.
  • Use a liquid clarifier – a liquid clarifier such as Jacuzzi Spa Clear gathers all small particles together, making them large enough to get stuck in the filters, leading to clearer water.
  • Drain and refill your hot tub – as a last resort, you may need to drain the water out of your hot tub, flushing out the pipes, and refill your hot tub with fresh water. We provided a guide to replacing the water in your hot tub here.
