The chairman of a leading Shropshire and Mid Wales business is predicting a bumper tourist season the region this year.

Tony Bywater, from Salop Leisure, which has caravan and motorhome sales centres in Shrewsbury, Machynlleth and Stourport, says the early spring heatwave last weekend has given the tourism industry a great boost.

Thousands of visitors headed to the Cambrian Coast and attractions in Shropshire and Mid Wales as weekend temperatures soared in glorious sunshine. With many schools in the West Midlands closing early for Easter, families took full advantage of the weather to enjoy a break at the seaside or in the countryside.

“It was great to see children and young families running around on the beach, splashing in the sea and sunbathing in the wonderful weather,” said Mr Bywater, who visited the Cambrian Coast himself.

“The high number of touring caravans and motorhomes on parks in Mid Wales has been amazing. I have heard of people extending their stay on parks from one week up to three weeks because of the favourable weather. Sunshine does make a huge difference.”

However, many people remain cautious about spending in the current economic climate and are looking for value for money, he explains.

“One reason why we are enjoying so much success is that we have a product that gives tremendous value for money,” he added. “People who buy a caravan holiday home, touring caravan or motorhome can use it for most of the year anytime they please.

“It has become more trendy to holiday in the UK and to do simple family things, like playing football on the beach or going walking, fishing and cycling.

“We are seeing more and more cars coming to our sales centres with bike racks on them. A growing number of people want to use caravans in conjunction with cycling and water sports, such as canoeing.

“The fact that more people are holidaying in the UK is also fantastic news for attractions and local shows in Shropshire and Mid Wales, which provide an entertaining family day out.”

Salop Leisure has also recently invested in a children’s play area at the company’s Shrewsbury headquarters, which is proving very popular with young families.
