Sales of aquatic plants and strips of vegetable seedlings are soaring at a specialist plants centre in Shrewsbury this year.

Love Plants, based at caravan and motorhome dealership Salop Leisure’s Emstrey headquarters, is reporting great demand for vegetable seedlings and seeds, which manager Tim Robinson attributes to the high number of allotments in Shrewsbury and surrounding area.

“There must be a couple of thousand people with allotments in Shrewsbury and a lot of them have come in for seeds a strips of vegetable seedlings,” he said. “We sell everything from carrots, leeks and runner bean to tomatoes and salad crops.

“The beauty of vegetables is that they can grow in pots or compost bags and it gives you the pleasure and satisfaction of growing your own food.”

Sales of aquatic plants are also racing ahead of last year’s figures, as more gardeners are introducing water features to their gardens. “Introducing water to a garden gives it another dimension and it’s also good to wildlife,” said Mr Robinson.

“Gardeners can start with a tub and put in some water lilies or create their own pond to make a feature. The sound of trickling water is very relaxing and soothing.”
